Trying To Discuss Politics On TikTok? You Might Need Some 'Cute Winter Boots'

We’re living in unprecedented times (again). Donald Trump is back in office, TikTok was “taken away” and then reinstated faster than we could refresh our feeds, and suddenly, everyone’s For You Page feels like a confused AI curated it. Add to that the fact that TikTok slang is evolving at the speed of light, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for collective confusion. Case in point: the “cute winter boots” trend.

At first, this phrase sounds like peak winter girl aesthetic — if you immediately thought of UGGs, you’re not alone. But as with everything on TikTok, there’s a deeper, more chaotic meaning. Some users are convinced their algorithm is broken, while others are busy decoding cryptic captions and wondering why “cute winter boots” videos have nothing to do with, well, actual boots.

It turns out that this trend has less to do with fashion and more with fighting against censorship.

@kristinacotton I can’t DENY how cute the boots were today. it’s hard not to DEFEND them. I didn’t see anyone DEPOSE of any winter boots either. #cutewinterboots #winterboots #chicago #fyp #foryoupage ♬ origineel geluid – nina.editss

What Is The ‘Cute Winter Boots’ TikTok Trend?

The “cute winter boots” trend isn’t about scoring the perfect cold-weather footwear. Instead, it’s TikTok’s latest code word — a creative workaround to discuss sensitive topics without triggering the app’s algorithmic wrath.

Apparently, TikTok has been cracking down on videos that address political or controversial issues, often removing or suppressing them. According to AP, people are noticing that their posts and comments are being moderated, and things are getting flagged as “policy violations” more than ever before. So, creators started using “cute winter boots” as a disguise. They’ll typically say the phrase aloud in videos but have the real message written somewhere else — like on a piece of paper or in the background of the video.

So what messages are they trying to convey that keep getting censored? They typically range from advice about navigating political changes to updates on protests or community events. It’s basically their hack to get away with having conversations that might otherwise get flagged by TikTok’s content moderation system. Similar to when people used “Dior bags” as a code word to refer to drones

If this all seems very dystopian and frightening to you, join the club. But with Trump already making it clear that he’ll be coming down on reproductive rights, trans rights, and undocumented immigrants, it’s safe to say that no one is taking any chances.

Sure, it might be a little confusing at first, but just know the more “cute boots” that pop up on your TikTok timeline, the more in-the-know you’ll be. It’s going to be four very long years.

What Does Ben & Jerry’s Have To Do With ‘Cute Winter Boots’?

If you’ve seen TikTokers casually dropping “Ben & Jerry’s” into their “cute winter boots” videos and thought, “What does ice cream have to do with boots?”— same. But there’s actually a deeper connection here, and no, it’s not about a new limited-edition snow-themed flavor.

Ben & Jerry’s isn’t just about giving us iconic flavors like Cherry Garcia — they’ve also been that brand when it comes to standing up for social justice. Over the years, they’ve championed everything from climate action to marriage equality and racial justice. Basically, they’ve always been the ice cream you want in your corner when the world feels like a dumpster fire.

Recently, though, things got messy. Ben & Jerry’s is suing its parent company, Unilever, for allegedly trying to censor them — specifically after they made statements about Palestinian refugees and called for a ceasefire in Gaza. So they’re no strangers to feeling censored — which is probably why they’re being mentioned hand-in-hand with everyone’s “cute winter boots.”
