Niche Pop Culture Halloween Costumes For The Chronically Online Girlies

If you are reading this it is likely that you’re aggressively online. You remember when Angela Basset did the thing, you know too much about Miranda Sings and her ukelele, and you remember where you were when it was announced that Ariana was dating SpongeBob. It’s been a year for pop culture, both mainstream and on the lil’ weird deep dark corners of the Internet for all us lil’ weirdos. What better way to memorialize all of 2023’s bananas moments than with a fitting Halloween costume? I came up with some ideas to inspire and excite.

M3GAN from M3GAN

Going as our favorite ass-shaking, cyborg demon child this Halloween doesn’t take too much work outside of a dress, wig, and terrifyingly stoic expression. Don’t forget to belt into a chilling rendition of “Titanium” at every opportunity.

The Met Gala Cockroach

May this legend RIP. Though its red carpet appearance was brief, they made a lasting impact on The Culture. Be sure to scurry past friends randomly for full impact.

Barney With Buccal Fat Removal

Buccal fat removal is all the rage, so much so that even purple legend Barney got in on the game this year. A de-stuffed costume or some overly-contoured face paint could do the trick if you lack the paper maché skills to pull off a DIY version.

A Ludicrously Capacious Bag

A funny, memorable, big-ass bag quip from Succession winner Tom Wambsgams became synonymous with the final season of the HBO epic. Going as said bag, a giant $$$$ Burberry tote, is clever and chic.

“That Motherfucker Right There Is Not Real” Plane Lady

One of the best parts of this costume? Getting to dress fairly normal while getting to act super cuckoo. Pro tip: Turn this into a group costume by having friends go as “not real” characters — Santa, the Easter Bunny, Sasquatch, etc.

Barbenheimer

The film event of the year is ripe for all sorts of costume picking, including a mash-up of the two characters themselves. Be Barbie on top and Oppie on the bottom, or vice versa.

The Grimace Milkshake At McDonalds

Be the giant taste bud (ya, Grimace is meant to be a giant taste bud) himself! Best of all, you get to stash your drink of choice for the evening in a Mickey D’s cup.

Pedro Pascal With His Sandwich

One of our favorite memes of the year, the adorable Just Mindin’ My Business of it all made Pedro snacking on a sandwich hilariously apt as a reaction for any moment. And! You get to eat sandwiches all night.

Waffle House Lana Del Rey

I have many questions about Lana showing up at an Alabama Waffle House earlier this year. And thus far none have been answered. But hey, the uniform is cute!

Kylie Jenner Wearing Schiaparelli Lion At Fashion Week

Speaking of unanswered questions, I find myself still puzzled by this now infamous Kylie lewk. Raid your nearest Toys “R” Us to recreate this seminal fashion moment.

Trump’s Mugshot

Work on your combover with this simple and spooky recreation of the most anticipated mugshot of all time. Nothing is scarier than treason!

The Roman Empire

Finally, we got an answer for just what is going on inside men’s heads. And it’s, as suspected, utter nonsense. The reigning meme of the year quite possibly, everyone will immediately “get” this one.

French Bedbugs

Bedbug costume + beret = genius.

Ice Spice & Ben Affleck’s Dunkin’ Commercial

The duo we didn’t know we needed and a delightfully ridiculous couples costume all in one. Make your Halloween run on Dunkin’.
