I know we’re still recovering from the 2024 Met Gala that happened back in May (will I ever heal from seeing Barry Keoghan in an 1800s peasant’s outfit?), but get back in gear, folks, because the first Monday of May is right around the corner. Sure, it’s technically a charity event and fundraiser for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, but as I’m not paying the $75,000 ticket to enter, my interest lies in the looks I expect to see on the red carpet.
The good people of Vogue announced the theme and dress code for the 2025 Met Gala late last year, and I’m sure designers have been working tirelessly to come up with creative interpretations. While I am super excited about this one, I’m also super nervous about what really tone-deaf celebrities are going to do with it. Here’s everything we know about the 2025 Met Gala.
The inspo behind 2025 Met Gala Theme
The 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” is broken up into 12 sections — from heritage to cosmopolitan — and is inspired by Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, a 2009 book by Monica L. Miller. (Miller is also a guest curator for the exhibit.) The book looks at the history of Black men who used fashion and style to challenge stereotypes, starting in 18th-century England and continuing to modern-day figures like André 3000. The book explains how these men, known as “Black dandies,” used clothing and attitude to reshape ideas about Black identity and push back against limiting roles in society.
What is the 2025 Met Gala dress code?
You know how last year, things got super confusing about the Met Gala’s theme versus the dress code? Well, to be super clear, the theme is all about the exhibition, and the dress code is all about what the celebs will be wearing.
This year, the dress code is “Tailored for You,” which was left sorta vague on purpose, according to Vogue. It’s “designed to provide guidance and invite creative interpretation,” Leah Faye Cooper, the magazine’s digital director, wrote. While it’s exciting that Black fashion (which is at the root of so much of the fashion industry we see today) will finally be up on a stage where it deserves to be, I also can’t help but be a little nervous to see how celebrities who usually appropriate Black culture *cough* the entire Kardashian family *cough* might do the theme injustice. But I’m going to remain hopeful!
Who is hosting the 2025 Met Gala?
The gala will be co-chaired by Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, Lebron James (an honorary co-chair), and, of course, Anna Wintour.
As far as who will be attending, there are already rumors circulating about the celebs we can expect to see on the red carpet: Simone Biles, Angel Reese, Sha’Carri Richardson, Ayo Edebiri, Audra McDonald, Janelle Monáe, Jeremy Pope, Doechii, Usher, Tyla, André 3000, and Rihanna. I mean, there’s no Met Gala without Rihanna.
