I know we’re still recovering from the 2024 Met Gala that happened back in May (will I ever heal from seeing Barry Keoghan in an 1800s peasant’s outfit?), but get back in gear folks because the good people of Vogue just announced the theme for the 2025 Met Gala. And I’m not gonna lie, while I am super excited for this one, I’m also super nervous about what really tone-deaf celebrities are going to do with it. The 2025 theme is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Here’s everything we know about the 2025 Met Gala theme.
The inspo behind 2025 Met Gala Theme
You know how last year things got super confusing about the Met Gala’s theme versus the dress code? Well, we haven’t been given too many details about the 2025 dress code just yet, but Vogue did explain that the theme was inspired by Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Idenitity, a book by Monica L. Miller. The book looks at the history of Black men who used fashion and style to challenge stereotypes, starting in 18th-century England and continuing to modern-day figures like Andre 3000. The book explains how these men, known as “Black dandies,” used clothing and attitude to reshape ideas about Black identity and push back against limiting roles in society.
Who will co-chair 2025 Met Gala?
The gala will be co-chaired by Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and of course Anna Wintour. And while it’s exciting that Black fashion (which is at the root of so much of the fashion industry we see today) will finally be up on a stage where it deserves to be, I also can’t help but be a little nervous to see how celebrities who usually appropriate Black culture *cough* the entire Kardashian family *cough* might do the theme injustice. But I’m going to remain hopeful! Meanwhile, the internet has its own thoughts.
Internet reactions to 2025 Met Gala Theme
Because the Met Gala is focused on Black culture, I need the invites to reflect that. I need the designers to respect black culture. This can be one of the most iconic themes of done correctly. pic.twitter.com/frLSxJMRyJ

I wanna see Black fashion commentators covering the Met Gala carpet, I want Black media outlets given priority access, I want Black curators and archivists to get to contribute, I want Black designers dressing EVERYBODY like they can’t half arse this. pic.twitter.com/T8z8B2UWjW

making the theme based on black style knowing how many non-black people attend the Met Gala is definitely… a choice https://t.co/SifU1rhe62

I HATE that MET GALA theme.
We actually don’t need non Black folks to pay hommage to a style a lot of their peers stole and made millions off. https://t.co/4QIqWYO8Wq— RENAISSANCE (@enukoleso) October 9, 2024
I know who better not be invited to the met gala next year pic.twitter.com/SwcLPNjnfU
