The scariest thing about Halloween is how much money celebs have to spend on their costumes. No quick trip to Target for them, they are going custom-made all the way. And why shouldn’t they? But if they’re going to spend on their costumes, we need them to be GOOD. And not just frat-party level good, but HEIDI KLUM-LEVEL GOOD. Yeah, that good.
That’s why we’re going to rank all of these 2023 Celeb Halloween costumes on the Heidi Klum-o-Meter to determine who deserves an invite to her iconic bash next year, and who needs to get in touch with their stylist ASAP.
The Biebers as the Flintstones
I’m not sure why people were excited by this costume, as it’s nowhere near as creative as all of the people dressing up as THEM this Halloween (if you know, you know). As usual, Justin is giving ***nothing***, but the shirtlessness is appreciated when you look like that. Hailey’s costume looks like it could have been picked up at a Dollar Store, and the wig isn’t very Flintstones at all — where dat bone at? Heidi would not be impressed.
2/10
Paris Hilton as Britney Spears
YES! An outfit paying homage to the iconic “Toxic” music video? LOVE THIS! Paris and Britney are besties, so we love this supportive energy as she dressed up as the flight attendant look from the video. This is also one of two pop girlie outfits Paris wore for Halloween, so she is in her girlboss era! Heidi would definitely appreciate a Britney look, although she would’ve made it even bigger and arrived by plane.
7/10
Ice Spice as Betty Boop
Every Halloween party must have at least one Betty Boop, it’s a rule of life, and that Betty will be the drunkest there, mark my words. This is a fun little costume, and the black bob adds some effort, but it’s nowhere near the effort that Halloween Queen Heidi put into her Betty Boop in 2002. I think even the makeup could’ve had a bit more work.
2/10
Kelly Sawyer Patricof and Jessica Alba As More Britney
It’s the year of Britneys! I think we expected far more Barbies than Britneys this Halloween, but I’m certainly not complaining. Jessica is stunning in another outfit from the “Toxic” music video (thankfully not the same as Paris!) and finished it off with a blonde wig. Love the sparkly bodysuit but that must have been hell when going to the toilet. Don’t break the seal, bestie! Alba’s friend Kelly went for the classic schoolgirl look from “…Baby One More Time” and I love it a little less. I’ve dressed up in this, and I am not friends with any celebrities (yet). It’s a little too Ginny & Georgia. So that balances out the score on the Klum-o-meter.
4/10
Reneé Rapp as Pamela Anderson
This pop girlie is making headlines, and this Halloween is no different. She dressed up in Pamela Anderson’s iconic 1999 VMAs look and she is STUNNING! I may be a little biased as an unhinged bisexual pop girlie, but I think Heidi would agree that any Pamela fans get points.
8/10
Demi Lovato as Snow White
A sexy little nod to the upcoming movie, Demi dressed up as Snow White with a corset and plunging neckline. I appreciate that she didn’t do the usual slutty Snow White of just a very, very short dress, and instead let her ta-tas do the talking. Also the lippy is cute. But no apple in sight? Heidi demands more props.
3/10
Charli D’Amelio and Landon Barker as Romeo and Juliet
It’s just so sugary sweet. This young couple went as Romeo and Juliet from Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation. Her literal knight in shining armor. It’s adorable, but also desperately reminding me that I’m still single. Points for cuteness but also points removed for low effort.
2/10
Halsey as a Mermaid (I think??)
Going full glam, Halsey wore sheer white and a bunch of silver jewelry, and is supposed to be a mermaid or siren, I believe. She looks gorgeous, and the face paint is definitely putting her on Heidi’s radar, but the rest is a little low effort. It’s not very Heidi to not be able to tell what someone is dressed as. It’s a strong start but feels half-finished.
5/10
Billie Eilish as Cat Ballou (NOT JUST A COWGIRL!!)
Can everyone stop labeling Billie’s costume as “cowgirl”?!? She went as Cat Ballou, played by Jane Fonda in the 1960s western of the same name. Obviously Billie would do a deep-cut Halloween costume, she’s just not like other girls. Her originality and acceptance of inevitable mislabelling get her big points. Also, the strawberry blonde hair is such a look!
7/10
Paris Hilton as Katy Perry
First Britney and now Katy? Wow, Paris is really here for the girlies. She is channelling the mushroom look from Katy’s tour and she is truly pulling it off. It’s fun, sexy, and definitely uncomfortable.
6/10
Lori Harvey as Lara Croft
Without those holsters, she’d look like me hungover at Starbucks in the summer. There’s not much more effort you can give to Lara Croft, but it also isn’t the newest costume out there. She looks gorgeous but Heidi would not be too impressed.
1/10
Justin Bieber as a Diver
For another party, Justin came as a diver. No sign of his wife in this one, so I have to assume she’s swimming around elsewhere. This costume is such low effort that I don’t want to even call it a costume. It screams that high scuba instructor you meet and screw on holiday. He is too rich to be dressing this way. It’s giving hoodie and crocs.
1/10
Kendall Jenner as Marilyn Monroe
Following in her big sister’s shoes, Kendall dressed up as Marilyn, modeling her 1953 Life magazine photo shoot. It’s a simple costume but the wig really sells it. Although we’ve only got photos from her own Instagram, and so it’s always something else to see the costume out in the wild. It’s simple but cute, and Heidi surely has a soft spot for blondes.
4/10
Chrissy Teigen as Pippi Longstocking
People keep saying she’s “doll-inspired,” NO SHE IS PIPPI LONGSTOCKING, put some respect on her NAME! This was an icon of my childhood and I definitely dressed up as her a few times. As a result, I am undoubtedly biased and love the wired braids.
4/10
Chlöe Bailey as Catwoman
It’s hard to look away from this costume, wowza. Chlöe really killed it. In this very very very fitted black latex Catwoman costume, Chlöe is a fierce feline indeed. Extra points for picking a groovy black mask in lieu of the traditional Catwoman mask.
6/10
Channing Tatum and Zoë Kravitz as Rosemary’s Baby
We love a creepy costume for Halloween, and this iconic couple is ready to give it to us! They went as key characters from Rosemary’s Baby, with Channing as the baby. I think the creepiest thing about this costume is that Channing still looks sexy in that onesie — sorry!!!
4/10
Keke Palmer as Bride of Frankenstein
Always one to go all-out for Halloween, Keke dressed as the Bride of Frankenstein this Halloween. She even got 8-month-old Leo involved, dressed as Henry Frankenstein and standing over her. Love the mama energy and fun caption of “He gave me LIFE” to match!!
9/10
Drew Barrymore as Bob Ross
View this post on Instagram
Sporting his signature afro and beard, Drew Barrymore transformed herself into Bob Ross, host of The Joy of Painting. It’s a fun little nod to a fellow TV show host, and included absolutely no sex appeal, which is a commitment I’m sure Heidi would appreciate. However, aside from the hair, there isn’t much else to the costume, so it’s a little bit easy (aside from the wicked beard burn her hunny will get by the end of the night).
5/10
Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly as Kill Bill
Finally, a pair that would make Mama Heidi so proud! This couple is pretty spooky all year around (remember that sharing blood stuff?) so they were READY for Halloween. They went as characters from Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Volume 1. Machine Gun Kelly is dressed as Uma Thurman from the film, and Megan is dressed as the fictional assassin, Gogo Yubari. We love to see it!
8/10
Selling Sunset Trio as Fuck, Marry, Kill
Chrishell Stause, Emma Hernan, and Chelsea Lazkani dressed up as the party game of “Fuck, Marry, Kill” in lingerie. It would be a bit more original if I hadn’t seen this costume all over TikTok for the past week. Also, if you need a sign to confirm your costume, you’ve done something wrong.
2/10
Jenna Dewan and Steve Kazee as Edward Scissorhands and Kim
Finally, a Tim Burton costume!! The couple dressed up as Edward Scissorhands and Kim and it’s ranking well on the Klum-o-meter. While Jenna’s costume is simple (and looking a little ill-fitted?), she did finish it off with a long blonde wig. And Steve is absolutely CARRYING the couple with his Edward look. I just wonder how he managed to hold a drink all night.
9/10
Austin Butler and Kaia Gerber as Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick
Thank God Austin didn’t come as Elvis, and I hope he’s lost the accent by now. The couple dressed up as the ’60s icons, with wigs, a turtleneck, and a faux-fur jacket. I think Heidi would love the reference, and she’s a sucker for a good wig!
7/10
Kelsea Ballerini as Barbie
It seems the girlies thought everyone would go as Barbie, and as a result, almost no one did. So that makes Kelsea one of the few Barbies of the night. It’s a wonderful homage to Margot’s Western costume in the film, and she looks stunning!
6/10
Megan Thee Stallion As A Flower
Okay, I genuinely thought she was the plant from Little Shop of Horrors at first, my apologies. But no, Megan went even more niche, as a flower from Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. The commitment really stands out, and I could actually see Heidi dressed as this!!
10/10
Kourtney Kardashian as Kim Kardashian
View this post on Instagram
Wow, what a brain teaser of a title. Kourtney found the perfect bump-friendly costume… Kim’s 2013 Met Gala look, where she was pregnant with little Northie. She’s wearing the full-length floral gown, with her makeup and hair styled in the same way. It would seem that this signals an end to the feud, but let’s not forget that this look was absolutely panned by critics at the time, and considered anything but a success. Sisters are always there to remind you of your biggest mistakes!! Points for the piping hot tea.
5/10
Edward Norton and Shauna Robertson as the Beckhams
Seems like someone’s been streaming the Netflix documentary, as the happy couple came as Posh and Becks themselves! It’s a rather low-effort costume, but they did go all-in with fake tattoos, a Manchester United jersey, a black bob, and the SYMBOLIC little black dress.
4/10
Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly as Death Note
So my ex was really into anime (don’t get me started) and as a result, I can actually recognize these costumes!! It’s quite a niche costume for non-anime fans, but I love the effort that went into it, like the apple decor. Megan also managed to make it very sexy which has anime fans across the globe exploding right now.
8/10
Camila Mendes and Rudy Mancuso as Mario and Luigi
Ah, Mario and Luigi, the OG fuckboys. This is the ultimate frat boy costume, and while I applaud Camila for being Mario (aka the one that wears the pants), I’m really not thrilled by this look. Luckily, her catwoman costume reminded us why we like her so much.
1/10
Chord Overstreet and Glen Powell as Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
So apparently these two are friends?? They’re dressed up as Cal Naughton Jr. and Ricky Bobby, or just “race car drivers.” These costumes are fun and probably had them sweating buckets throughout the night, so points for dedication.
5/10
Christina Aguilera as Cher
View this post on Instagram
Umm not only is Xtina dressed up as the ICON, Cher, she is dressed up as her literal co-star from Burlesque!!! Channeling the legend’s “If I Could Turn Back Time” look, she is making me wish I could turn back time to see it for the first time again.
9/10
Mariah Carey as Jessica Rabbit
View this post on Instagram
Mariah emerged from her hibernation until Christmas to bring us another glamorous star, Jessica Rabbit. Donning auburn locks, elbow-length black gloves, and a sleeveless red gown with a very cheeky slit, this look is a classic for good reason.
7/10
Kylie and Kendall Jenner as Sugar and Spice
It wouldn’t be a complete list without Kylie Jenner making an appearance! For Kendall, this look was just another chance to use her blonde Marilyn wig. For Kylie, it was a chance to break out her infamous lip kit and tug on a daunting black corset. Points for covering lesser-seen characters from the Batman films, and it’s always fun to see sisters dressing up together!
5/10
Vanessa Hudgens and Cole Tucker as Zorro
Vanessa (better known as Gabriella, or that wimpy character who shouldn’t have beat Sharpay in High School Musical) and her fiancé dressed up as Zorro and Elena De la Vega from the 1998 film, The Mask of Zorro. It’s more than we expected from Vanessa, although it’s minimal effort compared to some others in the running.
3/10
