First dates come with a lot of very tactical vetting. You want to figure out whether you’re sitting in front of someone who could potentially be your next partner… or someone who could cost you about nine months of therapy. To do this in a discreet, calculated way, a lot of people have developed their own system for sussing dates out. This could be watching how many times they check their phone, paying attention to how they speak to service staff, or even just seeing how they answer specific questions you have about random topics. I know what you’re thinking: “Can’t you just be open and honest to try and figure out if you’re compatible or not?” And the answer is no. Why? People like to put on facades for first dates and wait til about date four to show their real crazy. (I’m not jaded, you are!) This is exactly why Olivia Rodrigo asks her first dates a very specific question to figure out if they’re worth pursuing or not: “Would you want to go to space?”
It’s true. Only women should be going to space.

Now, I know this seems super random, and as an almost 28-year-old, it might be weird taking dating advice from someone who’s only 21 — but how can I not trust the queen who wrote “good 4 u”?? And she doesn’t just ask the question because she’s weirded out by space or is looking to land an astronaut.
In a Netflix promotional video, she explained that she asks that question because any man who wants to go to space is full of himself — and just weird. And honestly? I totally get that. I mean, you really don’t have to look far for examples. Elon Musk is definitely one of the most vain and weird men I’ve ever heard of — and he’s obsessed with space. I mean, even Grimes responded to a post about Olivia’s question and confirmed by replying, “It’s true. Only women should be going to space.” And if anyone is a good warning for dating men who want to go to space, it’s Grimes.
Sure, basing the future of your potential relationship with a guy on this “oddly specific” question may seem extreme, but don’t we all have little, particular rules for ourselves when it comes to dating? I mean, I will never date a Pisces man, a man who’s into anime, or a bald man — these aren’t exactly the same thing, but all of that is to say: I get it, Olivia.
