So... What Does Matty Healy Think Of 'The Tortured Poets Department'?

Updated April 24, 2024: So, how’s everyone doing after the shock to the system that was The Tortured Poets Department? A DOUBLE album, of course. Taylor’s eleventh album is a phenomenal collection of angsty pop songs that are mostly about longing for Matty and being heartbroken about their split. Oh yeah, and there are one or two about Joe, I think. The pop icon did not hold back at all in this project — she fully called out all the Matty haters (lookin’ at you, Petition Swifties), crooned about craving him while she was still in a relationship, and opened up about how their love was “momentary” but “legendary.” Pop culture really does not get wilder than this unhinged album.

As we all know, the 1975 singer is generally a man of many words. He’s talked about Taylor in several interviews before, so surely he has lots of thoughts to share about an album that’s mostly inspired by him. I know this is all a lot to keep up with, so let me help: Here’s everything we know about Matty Healy’s reaction to The Tortured Poets Department.

What Has Matty Healy Said About The Tortured Poets Department?

Um, apparently he loves it?? Well, kind of. On April 24 a video of Matty surfaced of him responding to someone asking what he thinks of the “diss track,” which is so lol. Matty said, “I haven’t really listened to that much of it, but I’m sure it’s good.”

Sure, sure.

Also, an insider told Us Weekly: “Matty still thinks very highly of Taylor but we were all nervous about what she might have said on the album.” They claimed he “couldn’t be happier” with the album content. Honestly yeah, I guess it’s mostly very positive about him. Matty’s family was aware of the relationship (who wasn’t) and had a lot of concerns about TTPD coming out, but they’re reportedly relieved now.

The Us source also shared that Matty was “really appreciative” to get a heads up about the album beforehand. “He was worried that their story would be shed in a negative light,” they said. And naturally, he was also worried about the Swifties tearing him apart. “Their relationship was fast, but extremely passionate and real,” the source continued, adding that they “don’t speak anymore,” but “had a strong bond.” Well, goddamn. That much is clear from one listen.

He Went On A Possibly TTPD-Relationed Rant In February

The singer is famous for his strange rants, and this particular one happened at a February 8 show… just three days after the Grammys when Taylor announced TTPD. “Do not come for me,” Matty warned. “Trust me. You know who I’m talking to. Honestly, you know who you are. I’m as mental as I seem. I have the receipts. Don’t fuck with me. Trust me.” That definitely could’ve been a message to ~passionate~ Swifties… maybe he’ll address the subject more specifically later on.
