Sooo, apparently some fans are now convinced that Chappell Roan’s Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess track, “Kaleidoscope,” and her unreleased track, “The Subway,” are about singer-songwriter Annika Bennett. The speculation is based on Chappell’s story about falling in love with a “best friend” and a few possibly telling lyrics in both songs. Now, this Chappell x Annika theorizing is an incredibly niche corner of TikTok… but I am literally wearing Annika Bennett’s merch as I type this on my laptop that has a Chappell sticker on it, so I really am the right woman to deliver this information. Allow me to explain the rumored Chappell Roan and Annika Bennett lore and why fans think “Kaleidoscope” and “The Subway” might be about Annika. I would like to emphasize that these songs could be about anyone/multiple people, and I am merely relaying a fan theory!

While speaking about her song, “Kaleidoscope” at a Grammy Museum event in early November, Chappell opened up about the time she fell in love with her best friend. (She’s also shared this story at several concerts before playing that song.) “I was in love with her and it was so amazing even though she didn’t feel the same,” the singer explained. “I’m so grateful that that happened because for the first time, I got confirmation that ‘Yeah, I’m not a fraud for saying I’m gay.'” She emphasized, “What an incredible person to fall in love with for the first time. Like, your best friend that you think is awesome and hilarious. It was just perfect, looking back.” Chappell said that after she shared her feelings with this friend, they didn’t speak for about a year and a half, but they eventually became friends again.
Are Chappell Roan’s Songs, “Kaleidoscope” And “The Subway,” About Annika Bennett?
@celebg0ss Replying to @redarrrroyo so happy they were able to work it out and remain friends!!! (disclaimer: all pics came from chappell and annikas public instagram pages! if they didnt want it out there/ didnt want fans knowing who she was talking about in subway, she probably would have deleted these pics.) #chappellroan ♬ The Subway by Chappell Roan – Chappell Roan Now
Based on lots of Insta photos on both Chappell and Annika’s accounts, they were besties for a while. They’ve collaborated on music too — Annika’s a credited songwriter on Chappell’s song, “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl,” which happens to be one of my faves. In “Kaleidoscope,” Chappell’s song about falling for her bestie, she sings, “Everything has changed / The way I write your name / The cursive letter A.” Of course, Annika starts with A (expert-level analysis skills, I know), so that’s part of the reason why fans think she could be the subject of the lyrics. Annika and Chappell currently follow each other and as a follower of Annika’s, I know she frequently posts about Chappell’s music and success. Even if they went through a tough moment, they’re all good now!
Why might “The Subway” be about Annika, you ask? Well, in the first line, Chappell sings, “I saw your green hair,” and yup, Annika has green hair. HOWEVER, this lyric could totally just be a Statue of Liberty reference since the whole song is very NYC, so we don’t really know.
Just saying, if you haven’t been streaming Chappell or Annika, you gotta start now. They’re two of the most talented musicians in the biz.
