After her stellar performance at the VMAs last night, I truly hope people start to give Camila Cabello’s new album, C, XOXO, the time of day. There are so many perfect pre-game bops, fun empowerment anthems, and gorgeous heartbreak ballads! Camila sang a few seconds of “June Gloom,” a song rumored to be about Shawn Mendes, before transitioning into “Godspeed,” a song that I also assume is about Shawn. Shawn also performed at the award show and so did his other ex, Sabrina Carpenter, who recently released several songs that appear to be inspired by Shawn and Camila. It’s whole wild, messy saga. Honestly, someone could probably write a 500-page novel about Shawn and Camila’s love story.

Back in her Fifth Harmony era (before she pulled a Zayn Malik and left the group), Camila and the girls opened for Austin Mahone in the summer of 2014. Yes, Austin as in the guy who we all thought was gonna be the next Justin Bieber. When Fifth Harmony appeared on Watch What Happens Live the following November, Andy asked which one of them was “the Mahone girlfriend,” and Camila revealed, “That would be me.”
But that wasn’t the case for long… they broke up by the end of that month. Austin moved on swiftly with Becky G and told MTV that he’d never been in a “real relationship before.” Camila was understandably not a huge fan of that comment, and that day, she tweeted, “Damn … good to know.”
Camila later told Seventeen that Austin was her first kiss and “first love.” She noted, “It’s important to learn about liking somebody and being swept away, but it wasn’t meant to be.” The drama!

Camila and Matthew The Dating Expert were first linked in February 2018 when they were spotted kissing on a beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
The “Havana” singer gushed about the author and YouTuber during a November 2018 interview with Marie Claire. “Any time he’s there, I get super nervous,” she dished. “I stutter or my hands are shaky.” She reflected, “He’s so similar to me. In person, we’re just weird and silly and stupid together. He makes me the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.” I just know Shawn, who was still pining for Camila then, was raging after that one.
People reported Camila and Matthew’s split in June 2019, just days after she and Shawn released their steamy duet, “Señorita.” A total coincidence, I’m sure.

Shawmila actually met through Austin Mahone, funnily enough. When Shawn also opened for Austin during the summer of 2014, he and Camila became besties. They released a song together called “I Know What You Did Last Summer” in 2015, and maintained a public and flirty friendship for years. Fans of the singers (me) always shipped them and assumed they’d eventually date.
Finally, Shawn and Camila made things official in July 2019, shortly after releasing their sexy duet “Señorita.” They frequently shared glimpses into their romance on social media, gushed about each other in countless interviews, and spent the pandemic together at Camila’s place in Miami. They even adopted a Covid Golden Retriever puppy and named him Tarzan.
The singers shocked fans when they announced their breakup in a November 2021 joint statement on Instagram. “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever ❤️,” they wrote at the time. “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends.”
But their love story continued in April 2023 when they reunited at Coachella and dated for a few months afterward. After Shawn, Camila went back to the dating expert community. She and Austin, the co-founder and CEO of Jewish dating app Lox Club, were set up by friends in June 2022 and dated for eight months. They mostly kept their relationship private but were spotted kissing and holding hands in Los Angeles.

In July, Camila told The Times that she is “completely single at the moment.” She joked, “I barely have time to fucking shave my legs.
