WTF Is Cortisol Face? And How Do I Fix It Without Blowing My Paycheck On Skincare

Remember when your biggest skincare concern was a stray zit before a big night out? Ah, the good ol’ days. Now, there’s a new kid on the block terrorizing our pores, and it’s called “cortisol face.” Yep, as if adulting wasn’t hard enough, now we have to worry about our stress hormones showing up on our face. But WTF is cortisol face, and how do we fix it without blowing our paycheck on TikTok beauty products? Let’s dive in.

What Is Cortisol Face?

So, is cortisol face just another trendy term on TikTok to freak us out? Unfortunately, no. Cortisol face is basically your body’s way of showing that your stress levels are out of control. It can show up as puffy eyes, breakouts, dull skin, and even premature aging. And it doesn’t always stop at the face. “Excessive cortisol production can cause a condition known as ‘cortisol face’ or ‘moon face,’ where the face becomes round and puffy,” Dr. Gowri Rocco, an expert in women’s health and hormone balancing, tells Betches.

Cortisol is a real hormone that our bodies produce when we’re stressed AF. It’s supposed to help us deal with whatever nonsense life throws our way, but when it hangs around too long, it starts causing problems. Think of cortisol like that friend who’s cool at first but overstays their welcome at your party.

“Stress affects the skin differently depending on the type of stress,” Dr. Rocco says. “High cortisol levels lead to water and fat retention and inflammation throughout the body.”

So yeah, it’s real, and it’s a total buzzkill.

What Causes Cortisol Face?

Let’s be real: life is stressful. From juggling work and social lives to figuring out what to order for dinner, our cortisol levels are constantly being tested. And while it’s normal to have cortisol spikes when you’re stressed, having it constantly in overdrive is not good for you.

“An increase in cortisol levels comes from lack of sleep and not exercising,” Dr. Rocco says. “If you have high stress levels, poor stress management can cause high release of cortisol.”

Other things like overworking, not taking time to unwind, and even doomscrolling on your phone can all send your cortisol levels through the roof. And guess what? Your skin is the first place that stress is gonna show up.

“People might wrongly believe they have a hormonal imbalance and stress over it, potentially leading to unhealthy behaviors or treatments,” Dr. Rocco says. So before you start adding all those trendy adaptogens to your cart, let’s talk about some ways to get your cortisol under control without needing to buy a whole new skincare routine.

Get Some Actual Sleep

Your body heals and recharges when you’re asleep, so make sure you’re clocking in enough hours. Minimum seven!

Move Your Body

Exercise helps burn off excess cortisol like magic. But don’t go overboard — running yourself ragged at the gym can have the opposite effect.

Chill Out

Seriously, take a breather. Meditate, do some yoga, or just take a minute to stop and smell the roses (or coffee, whatever works). Dr. Rocco even says laughing more can help lower your cortisol.

Eat Real Food

Add some leafy greens to your lunch. A balanced diet can do wonders for your stress levels and your skin.

Limit Screen Time

Your phone is a stress machine in disguise. Try to give yourself a break from social media and all the world’s problems — at least for a few hours.

Cortisol face may be real, but it doesn’t have to ruin your vibe. By taking care of yourself (and maybe just saying no to that fifth cup of coffee), you can keep your stress levels in check and your skin looking great. Now, go forth and stress less — your face will thank you!
