It’s that time of year again, where (if you’re like me) you scramble last minute to the nearest outlet mall praying that a Spirit Halloween has mysteriously taken over a vacant store overnight for a costume that’s suitable to wear to the annual office Halloween Happy Hour. Real talk: finding an office Halloween costume kind of feels like a living nightmare. I’d put it up next getting stuck in an elevator with your mother-in-law. Not only does it need to be work-appropriate but you also don’t want to be that one person who goes all out when everyone else just decides to wear a pair of cat ears (here’s looking at you, Karen). There’s an important middle ground between trying and not spending your entire paycheck on it.

Luckily, I’m legit the queen of Halloween and have worn just about every costume imaginable to the office and can tell you from IRL embarrassment which ones are OK and when to just say no. So without further adieu, here are the best office Halloween costumes that don’t totally suck.

Wednesday Addams

I feel like Wednesday has gotten a total glow-up thanks to Jenna Ortega and Netflix. But, what I love about this costume is that it’s simple, easy to create with shit you probably already have in your closet, and is likely a dress you’ve already worn to work—just styled with braided pigtails.

Ronald Gladden

TBH, if you don’t like Ronald Gladden, IDK if I want to be friends. This guy brought a lot of levity to TV this year and would be a great conversation starter over the office Halloween punch. All you need is a striped shirt and a makeshift juror badge.

Emily In Paris

Another costume that you could probably throw together from things in your closet and if we love anything, it’s being thrifty. Get major Emily In Paris vibes with a red beret, bold red lip, and pretty much any black blazer you have in your closet. Bonus points if you bring a baguette.

Morton Salt Girl

Morton Salt

It’s the kind of costume that looks like you put a lot of effort into it, when in reality you just got a yellow dress, stole an umbrella from your parent’s garage, and grabbed the salt from your cupboard.

Carrie Bradshaw

Honestly, it’s just fun to wear a tutu to work and it totally be acceptable. If there’s anyone else who grew up watching TV in the late 90’s they’ll appreciate your ode to the writer whose closet we’d all love to raid.

If your love language is, “Yes, chef!” Then this is the costume for. Not only is it easy AF to pull off but comfy too. Put on a T-shirt, blue apron, and a slightly awkward attitude and you’re good to go.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. All you really need to do for this is raid your closet for any and all black attire you have (and maybe a crystal or two). From there, add a classic hat and you’re halfway to winning the best costume award. If you’re feeling fancy, grab a broom from the office cleaning closet.
