Camila Cabello Leaning Into The 'Short N' Sweet' Discourse Is Kind Of Iconic

Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet album finally came out last Friday, and as Camila Cabello once said, “I luv it I luv it I luv it I luv it I LUV it.” Seriously. That album is 36 minutes of dangerously addictive pop perfection. Why am I using a Camila lyric to express my love for Short n’ Sweet, you ask? Well, Camila low-key might’ve inspired a few songs on the album. If you didn’t know, Sabrina and Shawn Mendes reportedly dated in early 2023. Shawn was previously with Camila from 2019 to 2021, and he ended up reuniting with the “Havana” singer at Coachella in April 2023 (a moment that went viral on TikTok). The following June, Shawn and Camila broke up a second time. Since Sabrina’s been publicly linked to Barry Keoghan for a long time now, I think a lot of fans totally forgot about her brief Shawn era.

In several songs on Short n’ Sweet, including “Taste,” “Sharpest Tool,” “Coincidence,” and “Dumb & Poetic,” Sabrina seems to allude to that chaotic love triangle situation. So, what did Camila think after hearing these tracks? I think she subtly weighed in with a new TikTok: Here’s Camila Cabello’s reaction to Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet.

I feel pretty confident that Camila’s August 25 “June Gloom” TikTok wasn’t a ~coincidence~. The track from her latest album, C,XOXO, has seen a bump in streams over the last few days due to the love triangle chatter — fans think Camila references Shawn and Sabrina in the lyrics. And Camila chose to post the exact 23 seconds of the song that social media detectives point to as evidence. “She’s cool, I heard / I won’t act surprised, I saw the pictures,” Camila says in the verse she posted on TikTok. (She could be referring to the paparazzi photos of Shawn and Sabrina here.) The next lines goes: “We’re a house fire for sure / Hope it’ll burn out but it just gets bigger.” This could be a metaphor for her and Shawn’s relationship, obvi.

And the next few lines might reference the night at Coachella or the brief Shawn and Camila reunion era in general. “If she’s so amazing why are you on this side of town?” Camila asks. “If you like her so much, what are you here trying to find out?” Messy, messy. To both Camila and Sabrina, I say: “Keep making those hits and getting that bag.”

Are Sabrina Carpenter And Camila Cabello Friends Now?

Well, the girlies don’t currently follow each other on Instagram, so I don’t think they’re besties. However, they were photographed together at the Vanity Fair Oscar party just last March, and they’ve shown each other support over the years. In 2021, a fan asked Sabrina if she would ever collab with Camila, and the “Taste” singer replied, “I love Camila Cabello. I’m such a huge fan of her. She’s amazing. Her songwriting’s amazing. Yeah, she’s always been so incredibly kind to me.” Oh, what I would do for that collab.

And although Camila doesn’t follow Sabrina, she did “like” Jack Antonoff’s June 25 post celebrating “Please Please Please.” The producer shared a photo of himself posing with Sabrina, a songwriter named Amy Allen, and audio engineer Laura Sisk, and wrote, “Motherfuckers thanks to all the ppp heads I love this song and the ones to come more than you can know.” Obviously, this was before the Short n’ Sweet songs rumored to be about Camila came out.

Call me delusional, but I’m still manifesting that Sabrina x Camila collab.
