Girls ended nearly a decade ago, but we as a society have not moved on. Not only have Gen Z fans discovered the show and millennials returned for repeat viewings, but there’s also a bunch of buzz about bringing the characters back for some kind of reboot. Well, actually, just one character in particular: Shoshanna Shapiro, played by the incomparable Zosia Mamet. Shoshanna is arguably the true hero of Girls. She was the only one of the main foursome to truly mature over the course of the series, and the only one to fully have the strength to call the others out on their toxic bullshit. So if anyone is deserving of a spinoff series, it’s Shosh, and Lena Dunham is on board.
“I love Shoshanna. I am on record as saying she is my favorite girl,” Lena said on the podcast Not Skinny But Not Fat. She went on to say it was “such a joy to watch Zosia be her,” and that she’d be down for a Shosh spinoff.
“So if there was, like, the right context for us to do it, I’d be fucking thrilled,” Lena said. “And also to do anything with her.”
Zosia also said she’s ready to jump on board a Shosh Girls spinoff during her own appearance on Not Skinny Not Fat, so we know we’ve got our star. And Lena recently offered some insight into what she thinks Shosh is up to these days.
“Shoshanna was married to, then divorced from, the mayor of New York City, and she runs an athleisure startup that’s zero-waste,” Lena told Variety.
While I don’t want to argue with the literal creator of the character, I do have some more ideas about where Shosh has ended up… and what that could mean for her spinoff series. Out of the goodness of my heart, I’m happy to share a few more pitches for the potential Shoshanna Girls spinoff series. And hey, if you’re reading, Lena, and any of these sound interesting, you know where to find me.
My Pitches For A Shoshanna Girls Spinoff

Mayor Shosh
Okay, so I’m intrigued by the idea of Shosh being married to the mayor of New York. But also, what if Shosh became the mayor herself? By the end of Girls, Shosh wasn’t afraid to tell it like it is — never forget when she called Hannah a “fucking narcissist” in the “Beach House” episode — and that kind of straightforward energy could be refreshing in the political sphere. I could totally see Shosh running New York in the tightest of top-knots.
Shosh In Japan
Perhaps Shosh’s most memorable Girls moment was her solo trip to Japan in season 5. She seemed to find herself in the brightly lit streets of Tokyo. So what if she just goes back? Maybe Shosh does get divorced (she was supposed to marry Byron at the end of the original series), and after the breakup, she goes back to Japan to reconnect to herself again.
Alt pitch: This is simply a Queer Eye style show where Shosh and her Japanese friends give people kawaii makeovers.
Shoshanna Goes Back To School
For most of Girls, Shosh was a student at NYU. It was her happy place, at least until she was struggling to graduate. But graduate she did, and then found herself in a tough job market. So what if Shosh decides to go back to her happy place and teach? This spinoff series would find our very millennial-minded Shosh dealing with a whole class of Gen Z students who inevitably baffle her. TBH, this one feels like comedy gold.
Virgin Doula Services
Another key aspect of Shosh’s character for a lot of Girls was the fact that she was a virgin. She eventually did the deed with Ray, but before that, her virginity was a bit of an obsession for her. So what if in her wise old(er) age, Shosh becomes a “virgin doula” who helps guide the next generation of young Shoshes through their sexual awakenings? I honestly think she was made for the job, and it would make for excellent television.
Hit me up, Lena! I have plenty of ideas for you.
