When Selena Gomez posted her IG Benny Blanco engagement announcement on December 11, my first reaction was: “OMG OMG OMG. YAY. I’M SO HAPPY FOR MY QUEEN.” My second reaction was, “Wait, what TF is up with the, um, Taco Bell set??” Like so many other observant and curious individuals, I noticed that Taco Bell seems to be a main character in the Insta dump announcement. Of course, all legit Selenators know that Selena is passionate about the Mexican-inspired fast food chain, so some kind of collaboration would make sense… but the context is admittedly confusing. IDK what the cheesy Gordita crunch or the Mexican pizza fits has to do with a celeb engagement. Was Taco Bell actually involved somehow in Selena and Benny’s engagement? Was it a Taco Bell commercial? A Taco Bell set? Let’s dive into the theories ’cause I, a Selenator, need answers.
Selena Gomez, Benny Blanco’s Taco Bell Engagement Theory
Why Was Selena Gomez And Benny Blanco’s Engagement On A Set?
Even at first glance, these engagement photos look slightly off, in the sense that, well, those trees are fake as fuck. There’s nothing natural about that nature background. And of course, the whole picnic situation and super green “grass” looks meticulously set up. Although it’s clearly supposed to look like a cute and casual picnic, that Taco Bell box is perfectly facing the camera, and it’s giving product placement. At the very least, we know this is a set, because in Selena’s Insta Story where she’s FaceTiming a friend and showing off the ring, you can see where the “grass” ends and where the lighting begins.
But why is it a set?? People on social media have a few different theories. One person tweeted that Benny was “recreating their Central Park picnic dates in a soundstage in LA,” and that would totally make sense. (Selena and Benny were spotted on Central Park picnic date back in May.) Others wondered if Benny proposed to Selena while she was filming a Taco Bell commercial… this seems unlikely because that would be lame, frankly. TikToker Samantha theorized that Benny planned a fake Taco Bell commercial. “We all know Selena Gomez loves Taco Bell, so Benny knew that Selena would agree to this commercial, and this is where Benny proposed,” she speculated. Someone in her comments pointed out that the engagement might’ve been private and perhaps Taco Bell just sponsored the pics. “A lot of people do engagement photos after,” they wrote. Again, believable!
I feel like the Twitter theory is probably right, but Selena and Benny, please share. And congrats!! (To them and Taco Bell.)
