Technically, the Met Gala happens every year to raise funds for the museum. But we all really tune in to judge celebrities’ abilities to follow a themed dress code. And this year’s dress code is the “Garden of Time” which means we’re gonna see a shit-ton of florals (groundbreaking). My expectations dropped even further when I saw that Anna Wintour fully apologized that she made the Met Gala theme too confusing to follow: “This exhibition broke my cardinal rule. When we came up with the title Sleeping Beauties, it’s wonderful and poetic and romantic, but actually, it could be many, many things.”
But Anna’s fears can be slightly assuaged because already the men and enbies are overperforming at this year’s Met Gala — sorry ladies! Sure, many of the men were still basic bitches in black suits, but those who stood out really paid attention to the details. From dog-shaped purses and bouquets of flowers to an explosion of glittery broaches on the lapel, these male and nonbinary celebrities know how to accessorize.
Jeff Goldblum
Jeff Goldblum is dripping in broaches like a goddamn gentleman. If the Oscars were any indication that it was a trend, Jeff proved on the green carpet that broaches are here to stay. He also brought back-up glasses and you have to respect responsibility.
Ben Simmons
Athlete Ben Simmons left his basketball shorts at home. With a clock briefcase, he’s already doing more for this dress code than most.
Bad Bunny
It’s giving Narnia’s Mr. Tumnus and I’m not mad about it. No, they’re not hooves, they’re Tabis. The Margiela shoes that the internet freaks out over like twice a year. And for good reason!
Leon Bridges
Now THAT is a belt buckle. Someone tell Beyoncé she’s not to the only one channeling cowboy energy this year.
Lil Nas X
Lil Nas X knew how important it is to get your nails done before a big event. Love that the jewels match the outfit.
Reece Feldman
A wiener dog-shaped bag? Sign me up.
Cole Escola
Comedian Cole Escola (they/them) brought the perfect addition to the dog bag trend. Also, making a note that I deserve to carry around a little basket bag full of flowers everywhere I go.
Colman Domingo
A bouquet of white orchids?! With the white cape? This is the way to do it.
Steven Yeun
Sure, it’s only an umbrella. But at least it’s giving him something to do with his hands! Steven is certainly doing more for this theme than Matt Damon and that’s all that matters to me.
