Wait, Why Did Shiloh Jolie Drop "Pitt" From Her Last Name? A Deep Dive

One by one, Brad Pitt’s kids are distancing themselves from him by dropping “Pitt” from their last names. He and Angelina Jolie share six kids: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne. Shiloh is the latest to ditch her father’s last name. On May 27, the day of her 18th birthday, she filed documents to legally change her name to just “Shiloh Jolie.” Obviously, it’s kinda telling that she did it literally the first day she was allowed to…

Shiloh’s big decision isn’t exactly out of the blue — the Jolie-Pitt family dynamic has been messy since Brad and Angelina’s 2016 divorce, which is still an ongoing legal battle eight years later. The split has evidently impacted Brad’s relationship with several of his kids, if not all of them. So, why did Shiloh ultimately decide to drop “Pitt” from her name? Here’s everything we know about the difficult situation and her reasoning.

Things between Brad and his kids have been complicated ever since the divorce. The exact reason for Brangelina’s split was a little unclear at the time, but new reports that surfaced in 2022 painted a clearer picture of what contributed to it — Angelina accused Brad of getting physical with her and their kids on a private jet, per legal documents. At the time, a rep for Brad called the allegations “completely untrue” in a statement.

In another statement, a rep for the actor said: “(Jolie’s) story continues to evolve each time she tells it. Brad has accepted responsibility for what he did but will not for things he didn’t do.”

It seems like over the years, many of the kids have aligned themselves with Angelina. “Maddox, Pax, Zahara and Vivienne are all adamantly on Team Angie,” an insider told Life & Style in April. Maddox, the oldest, also testified against Brad during a 2021 custody hearing. Although Shiloh hasn’t publicly explained why she changed her name, she likely joined “Team Angie” and takes issue with some of her father’s alleged behavior too.

Vivienne, Zahara, And Maddox Have Also Reportedly Dropped “Pitt”

Shiloh is certainly not the first of Brad’s kids to drop “Pitt” from her name. Vivienne recently worked as a production assistant on an Angelina-produced Broadway show and listed herself as “Vivienne Jolie” on the playbill. Zahara also introduced herself sans “Pitt” when she was inducted into the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority at Spelman College in November 2023, and Maddox has reportedly dropped his dad’s last name as well. That being said, Shiloh’s the only sibling who’s made it legally official so far. (It wouldn’t be shocking if the other kids followed suit soon.)
