WTF Is Group 7? A Proud OG Group 7 Member Explains

If you’re not an OG group 7 member, I’m kind of embarrassed for you, but I’m here to help. You may have noticed that suddenly, every single TikTok is a reference to the elite group 7, which became a thing in literally three days. (You really can’t miss a day on that app.) People have announcements for group 7, they’re bragging about their group 7 status, and they’re just enjoying life as a group 7 gal.

What started as a fairly basic TikTok experiment has now blossomed into an exclusive club of baddies, which happens to include Madelyn Cline and Naomi Osaka, among other iconic celebs. So what’s the deal with group 7, you ask? How did it start? How do you know if you’re a member? I’m in the mood to do some charity work today: here’s a full breakdown of the trend, so you can be somewhat in on the joke.

What Is Group 7 On TikTok? Sophia James Trend Explained

How Do You Know If You’re In Group 7 On TikTok?

Above, I’ve gifted you the original group 7 video. A few days ago, I was enjoying my usual late night scroll when I stumbled upon this video from TikTok creator Sophia James. “If you’re watching this video, you’re in group 7,” she announced, explaining that she posted seven videos to see which one would get the most reach. Sophia’s a musician and was using this method to promote her song, “So Unfair.” (Kind of a bop, for the record.)

I liked the TikTok, giggled at some of the generous interpretations in the comments, and went about my scroll sesh. But next thing I know, every fucking video on my FYP is about group 7. One thing about the people of TikTok? They love a bit and they love community. One dude pointed out in his own video: “I love how we just open this app, and someone’s like, ‘You’re in group 7.’ And we create a community, and I know nobody in this community, but I still feel so connected to each and every one of those baddies in group 7.” Same, Andrew. Same.

So, are you in group 7 now, since you’ve seen the original video and know the lore? Yeah, no. Not even close. To be an official member of group 7, you had to see the original video whilst scrolling — before you saw any of the videos about the original video. At least, that’s what people are saying in comments sections.

And to answer your other burning question: yes, there are six other groups. I was starting to think only group 7 existed, but you’ll find the other videos if you head over to Sophia’s TikTok. That said, the other groups are irrelevant and literally no one cares about them. We’re the chosen group <3.
