Just when I thought I was finally freed from the shackles of Belly and her brothers, show creator Jenny Han said: Nope, we’re not done yet. Turns out, we’re getting a The Summer I Turned Pretty movie, directed by Jenny herself and co-written with her longtime collaborator Sarah Kucserka.
Jenny shared the news at the red carpet celebration of the series finale in Paris. “There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due,” she said. “I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans.”
At the end of season 3, she hinted there was more to the story in a handwritten note to fans. “Maybe we’ll meet again one summer in Cousins,” the end of the message reads. She’s so Taylor Swift-coded with these easter eggs.
I think the show’s already used every song in Taylor’s catalogue, so thank goodness The Life of a Showgirl is coming out soon. More soundtrack options! Here’s everything to know about The Summer I Turned Pretty movie.
The Summer I Turned Pretty Movie: Release Date, Cast, Plot
When Is The Summer I Turned Pretty Movie Coming Out?
Prime Video hasn’t announced a release date yet, but I find it interesting that the series ended with a (seemingly) random Christmas song and montage. Could it be a hint that the movie will drop during a future holiday season?
Obviously, the TSITP film was just green lit hours after the series finale aired, so it will take some time to finalize the script and coordinate a filming schedule that works for the booked and busy stars.
On September 18, Jenny stopped by The Today Show to chat about the film. When asked about the writing process, she shared, “It’s still a little too soon to say. But Sarah Kucserka, my co-showrunner, and I have finished a draft, so we’re chugging along.”
She also revealed that the film won’t be coming out in 2026. “We don’t know when it’s coming out, but not next year,” she said. “Still have to make it.” Sigh.
The Summer I Turned Pretty Movie Plot

Jenny Han hasn’t revealed any movie plot details yet — she only teased that “there is another big milestone for Belly.” I imagine we’ll get to see Belly and Conrad’s wedding. (They get married at Cousins Beach in the third book, “We’ll Always Have Summer.”)
In the epilogue, Belly reflects on that day: “I am wearing the dress my mother and I picked out together — creamy white with lace cap sleeves and a low back. My hair, my hair that we spent an hour pinning up, is falling out of the side bun, and long wet strands of hair are flying around my face as we run for the car in the pouring rain. Balloons are everywhere. My shoes are off, I am barefoot, holding his gray suit jacket over my head. He runs ahead of me and opens the car door. We are just married.”
Personally, I’m very invested in Steven and Taylor and Denise and Jeremiah’s relationships, so I hope they all get plenty of screen time, too.
The Summer I Turned Pretty Movie Cast

The cast hasn’t been announced yet, but obviously, Lola Tung (Belly) and Chris Briney (Conrad) will star in the film. And we can also expect Gavin Casalegno (Jeremiah), Sean Kaufman (Steven), Rain Spencer (Taylor), Jackie Chung (Laurel), Tom Everett Scott (Adam), and hopefully Isabella Briggs (Denise).
