Prime Video’s new psychological thriller, The Girlfriend, was precisely the thrill I needed last week. I live for psychotic female villains, and this show delivered!

Based on Michelle Frances’s 2017 novel of the same name, the highly addictive series follows unhinged mother Laura who’s at war with her son Daniel’s equally unhinged girlfriend-turned fiancée, Cherry. The sneaky divas will stop at nothing to destroy each other, and their schemes only get darker by the episode. The acting is Emmy-worthy, the drama is abundant, and the ending is just completely insane. No notes from me.

Like many new fans out there, I’m already dying to know: Will there be a season 2 of The Girlfriend? Surely, the Prime Video execs can’t leave us hanging after that wild cliffhanger. Here’s everything we know so far about the release date, cast, and plot of a potential second season.

Will There Be Another Season Of The Girlfriend?

As of now, Prime Video hasn’t announced a second season. But I’m still holding out hope! The series only premiered on September 10, and it’s already getting lots of buzz on TikTok, which is always a good sign. Plus, it’s been holding strong in Prime Video’s Top 10 since its debut. Keep your fingers crossed.

The Girlfriend Season 2 Cast

If The Girlfriend returns for season 2 as it should, I’m sure Olivia Cooke would return to play Cherry, and Laurie Davidson would reprise his role as Daniel. Waleed Zuaiter (Howard) and Karen Henthorn (Tracey) would probably also return. (Considering Laura’s no longer with us, Robin Wright probably won’t be back for season 2 unless there are flashback scenes.)

Wright, who also directed the show, seems like she’d be happy to work with this crew again. “Being able to work with likeminded actors who understand their characters is unmatched, and we just giggle all day long,” she told Elle UK. “They’re beautiful, sweet, down to earth and kind.”

The Girlfriend Season 2 Plot

Assuming we get a season 2 of The Girlfriend, I’m thinking the new episodes would pick up right where we left off: Daniel looking absolutely terrified after hearing Laura’s conversation with Cherry’s mother. Hopefully, we’ll get to see new episodes about Daniel’s marriage and family life with Cherry. Will he try to escape her after that chilling warning from her mother? Will she turn on him and start acting psycho? How will she be as a mother? There’s so much more to explore, so I’m really praying Prime Video makes the right decision (renewal, ASAP).
