The Country Is A Dumpster Fire. Here Are Some Amazing Orgs Working To Clean It Up.

It’s giving…kind. It’s giving…caring. It’s Giving Tuesday. After a week of finding the best deals on gifts for yourself and others, today is the day to take some time to give back to the causes you care about. We’ve compiled a list of organizations that are making huge impacts in the places they are most needed. Some are also matching donations today, meaning your gift goes twice, or even three times, as far. It’s like finding a sale on that hair dryer you’ve been eyeing, except instead of waiting for a package to arrive at your door you get the instant gratification of knowing you did some good in the world. Even better, you can post about it on your IG story so all your friends know how smart and thoughtful you are.

National Network of Abortion Funds

Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June of last year, state governments across the U.S. have passed abortion bans and left 25 million women without easy access to reproductive care. The National Network of Abortion Funds is a network of more than 100 organizations around the country that connect people to the resources they need, whether logistical or monetary, to access abortion. A donation today will directly support someone seeking abortion care in a state where it is difficult to do so.

Lambda Legal (2x match for Giving Tuesday)

For over 50 years, Lambda Legal has been at the forefront of providing legal assistance to LGBTQ+ people as well as those living with HIV. Transphobic and homophobic laws are spreading across the country, particularly attacking young people, meaning Lambda Legal’s work is as timely as ever. Lambda Legal is matching all donations today two times over up to $50,000. That means $25 becomes $75, tripling the impact!

Last Prisoner Project

As legal marijuana sales have become a multi-billion dollar industry in the United States, thousands of people remain incarcerated for marijuana offenses. The Last Prisoner Project is a national nonprofit organization that aims to release people still experiencing incarceration for marijuana offenses as well as to reform the criminal justice system. They provide legal intervention, constituent support, and advocate for policy change. Your donation could transform someone’s life by connecting them with legal resources and support services.

Color of Change

Color of Change is the nation’s largest online racial justice organization creating movements to hold corporate and political leaders accountable. Color of Change fights systems of oppression and builds power for Black communities in all facets of life. They are making change at the ballot box, in media and pop culture, in the economy, in tech, and in the justice system. If you are looking to donate to a wide-reaching racial justice organization, Color of Change does great work that makes a big impact.

Moms Demand Action

Moms Demand Action is a leading grassroots organization in the fight against gun violence. They have a volunteer chapter in every state and D.C. working with local governments and businesses to pass gun laws that are proven to keep families and communities safe, close loopholes and encourage responsible gun ownership. Your donation can fuel their work to end the preventable and uniquely American nightmare of gun violence we are all so tired of living.

Earthjustice (matching donations)

Earthjustice is a nonprofit public interest environmental law organization that believes everyone has the right to a healthy environment. They have saved wildlands, fueled clean energy, protected species and taken on the nation’s largest polluters. Gladdis can’t do all the work herself, so Earthjustice is matching every dollar donated today.

EveryLibrary

One of the more disturbing trends of 2024 has been the fight against public and school libraries. EveryLibrary supports the right to read in communities around the United States by supporting ballot initiatives that fund local libraries. They also fight against political interference and threats of closure over books that could open up a person’s entire world. A donation today helps kids and people of all ages maintain access to books and other amazing resources libraries offer.

Every Mother Counts (matching donations up to $50k)

Maternal health care is reproductive care, and like access to safe, legal abortion, access to safe, equitable maternity care is limited. Every Mother Counts invests in community-based solutions as well as policy change to fight the maternal health crisis. Their work has supported more than 1.5 million individuals, families and health care providers worldwide. Today they’re working with FirstResponse and Tradeweb to match donations up to $50,000.

Bridget Schwartz
Bridget is Betches’ Senior Content Manager for News and Activism and strongly believes men are the reason for all of the world’s problems (with the solution being wine, obvi). Other fun facts about her: she’s Canadian, formerly a competitive Irish dancer, and can probably be found yelling into the void about reproductive justice.
