I am not emotionally prepared for Cannes 2025 after reading the list of life-changing premieres happening at the festival this year. Like, the star power is reaching dangerous levels. Apparently, the premieres include: a Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson thriller, a romantic drama with Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor (BRB, fainting and then dying), a Spike Lee movie with Denzel Washington, Tom Cruise’s last Mission: Impossible movie, and a Wes Anderson film starring Michael Cera, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hanks and Riz Ahmed. Yes, you read that all correctly.
The red carpet is gonna be particularly interesting this year because of all these A-listers, yes, but also because there are some pretty strict dress code rules. Per the official website for the event, “Nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival,” due to “decency reasons.” They really said: Do not pull a Bianca Censori. Or else. Plus, “voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted.” And “elegant shoes and sandals with or without a heel” are acceptable, but not sneakers. (I mean, thank god.)
Praying for an abundance of slays and few flops: Here are the best and worst dressed celebs at the Cannes Film Festival 2025.
The Best And Worst Dressed Celebs At Cannes 2025
Best — Simone Ashley
From the structured bodice to the sheer heels, she looks like a beautiful swan (complimentary). And do I spy pockets?! We love a functional fit.
Worst — Alana Haim
While I’m a fan of the color palette, the tiered skirt is giving ’80s prom dress. Sorry, Alana! Love the new single.
Best — Elle Fanning
The only time I’ll approve of sequins outside of a Homecoming dance.
Worst — Model Roz
This would be perfect… as a wedding cake. Unfortunately, this is a red carpet.
Best — Viola Davis
Viola is serving glamor and elegance in this bright yellow gown. She actually looks like a goddess.
Worst — Rihanna
It feels illegal to put her in the worst category, but I hate this Smurfs blue dress with the awkward knots on the side… I’m so sorry.
Best — Pedro Pascal
He’s only getting best because of the biceps, the spiky shoes, and that face card.
Worst — Jennifer Lawrence
… Is she getting married at Cannes? Not a fan of this pleated fabric.
Best — Paul Mescal
I fear the slightly slutty top is working on me, and yes, I’m aware that my bar for men is on the floor.
Worst — Emma Stone
Love this woman with all my heart, but I fear this is a baby bib masquerading as a dress.
Best — Robert Pattinson
Ya know what? Hell yeah. He looks dapper.
Worst — Jeremy Strong
Okay, so he just left the house in a bathrobe and slippers. But I’ll give him points for the cool glasses.
Best — Bella Hadid
Gagged. Of course, Bella’s already eating up the red carpet in an elegant black gown. She can do no wrong.
Worst — Heidi Klum
This is an unfortunate case of ruffle chaos. Did she even read the dress code??
Best — Ariana Greenblatt
THIS DIVA. Flawless, stunning, divine. Needless to say, she wins.
Worst — Halle Berry
I need quilt dresses to no longer be a thing. I’m actually begging.
Best — Andie MacDowell
A fierce masc moment for Andie?? Obsessed.
Worst — Zoe Saldaña
I feel like we could’ve saved the casual jacket for a dive bar or something?
Best — Natalie Portman
My jaw is on the floor. These glitzy fish scales takes the fisherman aesthetic to a whole new level and the velvet bow is giving.
Worst — Eva Longoria
The bodice is way too big and the skirt is too long?? Love the gold and black though.
Best — Angelina Jolie
Angelina’s looking angelic in this simple but gorge white gown.
Worst — Tom Cruise
This three-piece suit just looks kinda awkward on him, sorry.
Best — Charli XCX
Hang this photo in the Mona Lisa. I’m in love and speechless.
The 78th annual Cannes Film Festival starts Tuesday, May 13 and runs through Saturday, May 24. Stay tuned to see the rest of the celeb fits on the red carpet this week…
