Three months after Sabrina Carpenter seemingly spilled tea about her rumored situationship with Shawn Mendes on Short n’ Sweet, Shawn appears to be sharing his side of the story in his new album, Shawn. (I’m obsessed with the fact that he already has a 2018 album called Shawn Mendes and now there’s a Shawn. Maybe the next one will just be his initials. But I digress!) In her songs “Taste,” “Coincidence,” and “Sharpest Tool,” it sounds like Sabrina was pissed that Shawn didn’t commit to her and instead got back together with his ex, Camila Cabello. Fans think Camila offered her POV in her song, “June Gloom,” and now, it’s time to analyze Shawn’s new album to get his angle. Here are all Shawn Mendes’ Shawn songs that might be about Sabrina Carpenter.

Which Songs On Shawn Mendes’ New Album, Shawn, Are About Sabrina Carpenter?
“In Between”
“In Between” is Shawn’s ~situationship~ song, which (likely) translates to his Sabrina song. Surprise, surprise… Situationships are actually deep and meaningful from his perspective. And oh yeah, he didn’t do anything wrong by not committing! “If it doesn’t end with a ring, is it just sex?” he croons in the first verse. “If it isn’t black and white, then it’s onto the next.” In the chorus, Shawn asks about the “in-betweens,” a very generous term for being emotionally and physically intimate with someone, but refusing to date them. “What about the in-betweens?” he sings. “You layin’ your head on me / Livin’ for the next time that we touch / Isn’t that enough?” Yeah, if you ask Sabrina (and probably most people), I think they’d say no, that’s not enough <3.
In the song, Shawn acknowledges that his lack of commitment really upsets the other person — another reason why I’m guessing it’s Sabrina-inspired. “You were saying, ‘Guess I’ll see you never,’ with tears in your eyes,” he sings. “It’s so like you to get clever when you don’t wanna cry.” I definitely associate the word “clever” with Sabrina! In the next lines, he admits: “The way you hold a pen could make me fall in love / But I’m not there yet, so to you, it doesn’t mean too much.”
“That’ll Be the Day”
Obviously, this is mostly a (crazy) Camila-inspired song, but I do think Sabrina’s referenced here too. In the second verse, Shawn sings: “I could pretend that I have a chance / At another romance, but, honey, in the end / Even if I tried, I’ll be wastin’ breath / I’ll be fakin’ sex ’cause you’ll be on my mind.” At least he’s being honest about the Camila addiction here? This immediately made me think of Sabrina’s “Sharpest Tool” and her lyric “We had sex / I met your best friends / Then a bird flies by and you forget.” Both of their accounts make it seem like Shawn wasn’t fully present because he was thinking about Camila.
“Hallelujah”
Okay, this is clearly a Leonard Cohen cover. HOWEVER. In “Dumb & Poetic,” Sabrina accuses a man of “jacking off to lyrics by Leonard Cohen,” so that’s just an iconic parallel.
