Well, well, well. Four months after Sabrina Carpenter seemingly documented a messy situationship with Shawn Mendes in Short n’ Sweet, the Canadian crooner appears to be weighing in on the drama — and sharing his thoughts on the songs. Of course, he’s spilling the tea to his and every other white man’s idol, John Mayer. If you’re at all online and/or invested in the pop girlie universe, you’re well-aware that in songs like “Dumb & Poetic,” “Taste,” “Coincidence,” and “Sharpest Tool,” Sabrina appears to accuse Shawn of being a self-help and meditation-obsessed douche who ditched her for his ex, Camila Cabello. (Shawn did get back together with Camila after his reported fling with Sabrina.) Until now, he’s stayed pretty quiet about the whole situation, but in this new interview with John, he’s really laying it all out there. I watched the whole interview so you don’t have to: Here are Shawn Mendes’ quotes (presumably) about Sabrina Carpenter and Camila Cabello from his John Mayer SiriusXM interview.

Shawn half agreed that he fucked up (with Sabrina), but he was also low-key defensive. “I’m an impulsive person,” he said. “For instance, being with someone two days before seeing your ex and communicating two days before that that you’re going to go hangout with your ex.” Ope, it’s giving… the “Coincidence” lyrics, “What a surprise / Your phone just died / Your car drove itself from L.A. to her thighs.” Apparently, Shawn told ~the person he was seeing~ that he had “unresolved feelings” for his ex. “Maybe instead of two days, it could’ve been two weeks,” he admitted to John. Yeah, we’re only getting accountability crumbs, I fear.
Surprise, surprise: Shawn’s not a huge fan of the negative pop hits about him. (I have to assume he was mainly referencing Short n’ Sweet here.) He mused, “It’s a funny feeling to feel like you’re being written about and maybe the whole picture’s not being expressed.” Babe, I bet it’s a funny feeling to date someone and watch them suddenly reunite with their ex at Coachella and forget about you. Also, we’re talking about silly, sassy pop songs, not documentaries! Lol. “The suffering from hearing a song talking about you in a way you don’t wanna be talked about is not even close to the beauty of falling in love with someone for the first time,” Shawn reflected in the interview. When John asked if he’s open to dating someone “well-known that would put you in the magazines again,” the “Stitches” singer clarified, “I wouldn’t stop myself from falling in love with another songwriter.”
How does Shawn deal with these songs about him and giant billboards of his exes? Apparently, he giggles like the rest of us. “It becomes funny and then when it becomes funny, it becomes so palatable,” he explained. John joked that if Shawn died, his exes would still come to the funeral. “I hope so,” Shawn laughed.
Happy to hear he’s still open to dating songwriters because Sabrina and Camila’s albums about him? Fucking fire.
