I don’t think I’ve ever heard Sabrina Carpenter and Camila Cabello’s names in the same sentence before yesterday, but here we are. Sabrina’s new album, Short n’ Sweet, came out at midnight last night, and it is not just the Barry Keoghan bops we expected (though there are several of those.) I dare say at least half or more than half of the album was actually inspired by her early 2023 fling with Shawn Mendes and his habit of, well, always going back to Camila. For most of us, Shawbrina was just a surprising little blip, but for Sabrina, it was a Matty Healy-level situationship. And by that I mean… it clearly ruined her and then inspired several Grammy-worthy bops. “Taste,” “Coincidence,” and “Dumb & Poetic” are the Short n’ Sweet songs that most obviously refer to this love triangle, according to me.

It seems to be a juicier saga than we realized. You may recall that there were Sabrina and Shawn dating rumors when they were photographed together a few times in early 2023. The singers were spotted going on a walk together (Shawn’s favorite activity), they left Miley Cyrus’ Endless Summer Vacation album listening together, and a source told Entertainment Tonight that they were an item. “Shawn and Sabrina are seeing each other,” the insider said at the time. “They have been hanging out a lot and trying to keep things low-key. They were at a birthday party together a couple weeks ago and were cute together. Shawn is happy.”

Unfortunately for Sabrina, Shawn and Camila have literally been obsessed with each other since the Fifth Harmony and “Stitches” days… so Shawbrina was kind of doomed from the beginning. Camila and Shawn’s flirty friendship eventually evolved into a serious relationship, and they dated from July 2019 to November 2021. In April 2023, their PDA-filled Coachella reunion went viral, and that reunion would’ve been very close to the time Shawn and Sabrina were rumored to be dating. In Short n’ Sweet, Sabrina sings about (presumably) Shawn going back to his ex, and she even seems to reference the Coachella reunion night in the song, “Coincidence.”

“Your car drove itself from L.A. to her thighs / Palm Springs looks nice, but who’s by your side?” Sabrina croons in that track. (Coachella Valley is considered Greater Palm Springs.) In another lyrics, she observes: “She looks kinda like the girl you outgrew.”

Well, they don’t currently follow each other on Instagram, and they’re not publicly fans of each other’s music. (I note the latter part because both pop stars are fan girlies themselves and often post about their peers’ music on Instagram.) However, Sabrina and Camila do appear to be on speaking terms because they were photographed together at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party just last March, which was about a year after their love triangle drama went down. Mind you, I’m not sure how Camila’s gonna feel after hearing “Taste,” Dumb & Poetic,” and “Coincidence.”
