Lena Dunham's New Show 'Too Much' Looks Like The Grown-Up Version Of 'Girls'

If you’re deep into your third or fourth rewatch of Girls and looking for something new, well you’re in luck. Lena Dunham’s unique brand of comedy is finally about to grace our TV screens once again. No, it’s not a Girls spinoff series, but it is a sort of spiritual successor. The new series, called Too Much, is co-created by Lena and her husband Luis Ferber and is loosely based on their life together.

“When I met my husband, I was dazzled by just how much baggage two people could bring to the table,” Lena told Vanity Fair. “It was almost like we had Mary Poppins bags. It was like, It’s still coming out, it’s still coming out! I thought, ‘What would it look like to try to situate something in that rom-com space and then be honest about all of the stuff that’s trailing behind them?'”

But don’t take everything that happens in Too Much too literally as a Lena Dunham autobiography, especially with one detail in particular. The main character of Too Much, Jessica, has an ex-boyfriend that a lot of people might think is supposed to be a version of Lena’s real-life ex Jack Antonoff. But Lena shut that down.

“That ex-boyfriend is very much an amalgamation of every ex that I’ve had, or that a friend’s had,” she said to Vanity Fair. “If someone were to say, ‘Who inspired that character?’ I’d be like, ‘Do you have time for me to give you the 42 examples?'”

No matter how much of this story is based on real life, I am so ready for it. Here’s everything we know about Lena Dunham’s new show Too Much.

Inspired by Lena’s real-life move to London, Too Much tells the story of Jessica, a workaholic in her mid-thirties. Reeling from a bad breakup, she moves from New York to London for a new job. She plans on living a life of solitude until she meets a musician named Felix. Despite all his red flags, they have an unbreakable connection, making Jessica reconsider everything.

“I would like 34-year-old women anywhere to be able to look at Jessica and—while of course they won’t all connect to every aspect—see something of themselves in her,” Lena told Vanity Fair.
