Look, when I get married, it will be a child-free wedding. Not because I hate kids — far from it. Babies? Adorable. Toddlers? Hilarious. But I also acknowledge that they are unpredictable, chaotic little creatures who do not care if you are trying to have a deeply emotional moment with the love of your life. And while I totally get why parents get frustrated when people complain about babies in public spaces — like, yes, babies exist, and they also need to eat at restaurants and travel on planes — I do think it’s fair to set some boundaries. Like, say, your wedding ceremony.
This brings me to the absolute circus that was Claire Kendall Taetz’s wedding — one that was so chaotic it’s now trending. Claire, like me, planned for an adult-only affair. She even made an exception for her nieces and nephews, but one guest decided that his baby was apparently an exception to the rule. The result? Claire had to say her vows over the sound of a full-on baby meltdown.

Picture this: You’re standing at the altar, locking eyes with your soon-to-be husband, promising to love and cherish each other forever. And just as you’re about to deliver the most romantic words of your life… a baby shrieks loud AF.
That’s exactly what happened to Claire, who was shocked when a guest just let their baby wail through the entire ceremony. But because she’s a better person than me, she didn’t cause a scene. Multiple guests asked him to step out, and yet he refused, seemingly under the impression that his baby had just as much of a right to be there as the bride herself. Spoiler alert: The baby did not.
When speaking about the wedding afterward, Claire said that everyone thinks their child will behave, but children are unpredictable. You can’t guess how a baby will react to a quiet, emotional setting, and that’s exactly why people opt for child-free weddings in the first place.
Was the baby at fault? No. Babies cry — it’s their whole thing. But when you’re a parent, you have to read the room. And if the room is full of people trying to witness someone’s once-in-a-lifetime moment, maybe don’t let your kid screech through it like they’re auditioning for a horror movie. And maybe listen to the rules of a wedding beforehand.
At the end of the day, Claire and her husband still had a beautiful wedding, but let this be a PSA: If you get an invite to a child-free wedding, respect it. Or, at the very least, if your baby goes full banshee, have the courtesy to step out. Because no one wants their “I do” drowned out by a tantrum.
