Once again, the internet is pissed at Chappell Roan after she made a very questionable comment about politics. In a now-viral clip from her recent Call Her Daddy interview, the “Good Luck, Babe!” singer claimed that she doesn’t have time to educate herself on politics and argued that no one should expect her to have informed takes on political issues. It doesn’t sound great because… it’s not.
Now, I’ve been shaking ass and shower belting to this woman’s crack-infused pop music for more than three years. I’ve attended multiple Chappell Roan club nights, and I bought a ticket to see her at All Things Go last summer (the show she canceled after her last political controversy). As a huge fan, I have zero issues with Chappell setting boundaries with fans, saying her circle of mom friends are unhappy, or complaining about the toughest parts of fame. But when it comes to her cringe comments about politics, I can’t defend this diva.
Let’s unpack Chappell Roan’s Call Her Daddy politics controversy, shall we? I have lots of thoughts.
Chappell Roan Call Her Daddy Politics Controversy, Explained
What Did Chappell Roan Say About Politics On Call Her Daddy?
Chappell Roan basically made the case that pop stars don’t have time for politics. “How can these girls tour, write, perform, interview, sleep, eat, and fucking work out? And lead a team and be a boss and pay people? AND be fucking… so politically educated?” Chappell asked. She added, “It’s impossible. Also, why the fuck are you looking to me for some political answer? You think I have the fucking answer? I’m a pop star. I wish I had the answers.”
In fact, I can think of many, many reasons why people might be looking to Chappell for “some political answer.” Isn’t this the same girl who refused to perform at Biden’s white house because of her pro-Palestinian views? Didn’t she spend her Grammy speech calling for access to healthcare? Isn’t she constantly advocating for queer and trans people? Didn’t she claim that the late Irish activist Sinéad O’Connor “laid the groundwork” for her career? Not to mention, she was hardly silent ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
@chappellroanIm done talking about it. If you dont get what im saying from this, its a lost cause. And im not forcing you to agree with me. This is my statement. Have a good day♬ original sound – chappell roan
After Chappell was vague about her voting plan in a few different interviews, she shared a chaotic TikTok rant, clarifying her stance. “Yeah, I’m voting for fucking Kamala,” the singer clarified, mispronouncing the former VP’s name. “But I’m not settling for what has been offered.” She explained, “Obviously, fuck the policies on the right, but fuck some of the policies on the left. There is no way I can stand behind some of the left’s completely transphobic and completely genocidal views.”
So, which is it? Because I thought Chappell’s whole brand was ~politically educated leftist who isn’t afraid to speak truth to power~. But now, she’s saying she’s not even educated or qualified to share political views? Here’s the thing: If you’re not educated on a super important topic, you should not be confidently sharing takes on it with millions of strangers.
“Somehow she’s seen as a leftist icon and ally, but in reality, she’s a 27-year-old white woman who refuses to *legitimately* denounce MAGA and repeatedly mispronounces Kamala’s name,” @squirrelchodes wrote on X about the CHD clip. Another X user, @briasoboojie, chimed in, “For a woman who does drag aesthetics and who claims to be so for the LGBTQ+ community to be apolitical at a time like this is kind of some cowardly shit … Everyone should have a political opinion.”
If you’re not politically educated, you should get politically educated! There’s really no excuse — even for a booked and busy pop star who has to worry about writing, performing, interviewing, and eating, as Chappell says. Normal people who work full-time jobs, take care of kids, and do household chores manage to watch a few minutes of the news or read an article or two on their phone. Rich pop stars can handle that much, too. I have faith.
They’re already doing it. Just look at Olivia Rodrigo, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Ariana Grande, Gracie Abrams, and yeah, even Taylor Swift. They all endorsed Harris, shared their thoughts on why this election was so critical, and encouraged people to vote. Countless pop stars partnered with HeadCount, the voter registration non-profit, to get tens of thousands of fans registered to vote at concerts. Most pop girls shared links with helpful voting resources. Most of them have also repeatedly denounced T*ump. Several, including Beyoncé and Gracie, spoke or performed at Harris’ rallies.
When you have millions of fans, it’s especially important to be politically educated and outspoken about causes. Power comes with responsibility. If you really do care about Palestinians, gay and trans folks, other marginalized groups, and honestly anyone in this country who’s not a billionaire, it shouldn’t be too difficult to figure out who you support. Our current president is actively stripping rights away and destroying crucial government institutions as fast as he can.
So, yeah, you should be prepared when young, impressionable fans look to you for “some political answer” because you’ve repeatedly given them a reason to do so.
