TikTok-addicted girlies and Angels rise: Benito Skinner’s highly anticipated show, Overcompensating, finally drops tomorrow, May 15, on Prime Video. Co-executive produced by none other than Charli XCX (who also contributed music and makes an epic cameo), the series is inspired by Benito’s own coming-out journey. Overcompensating follows a closeted college student, Benny, as he comes to terms with his sexuality and attempts to fit in with a super hetero friend group. Benito, who’s obviously known for his viral TikTok comedy, stars in the series and also served as a writer and executive producer.

And Charli’s not the only iconic guest star — Benito apparently convinced a ton of his celeb pals and idols to cameo. This man was cold-approaching at parties, writing emotional letters, and really doing whatever it took to lock in a star-studded cameo list. Respect. Charli (Overcompensating Version) goes full ~insufferable pop star drama queen~ when she arrives at the college to perform. “Do you think I wanna play fucking ‘Boom Clap’ in a fucking college?” she yells in a student’s face in a teaser clip. “Are you joking?!” In the trailer, we also catch a glimpse of her performance. (It’s truly hilarious to think about the idea of Charli playing a college show now, but this was written pre-BRAT era.) According to Benito, Charli was “immediately down” to play a pop villain. He gushed about the pop icon to Pink News, calling her “brilliant and so funny.”

“I think as a friend, I was worried about her because I’m like, ‘How are you going to shoot?’” the comedian recalled. “She was in scenes and she just kept being like, ‘Yes, I’m shooting it. I’ll see you there.’ She shot her scenes in Toronto in between Sweat Tour shows.” The commitment! God, I love that woman.

All The Celeb Cameos In Overcompensating

The other celebs involved in the show play fictional characters… well, besides Megan Fox (a poster of her comes to life and offers Benny support). “I wanted to write her a letter too, just so that she wouldn’t read this and be like, ‘What the fuck is this?’” Benito revealed to Deadline. “And I tried to just be like, ‘You mean so much to so many people and to a lot of queer people. Jennifer’s Body means so much to queer people.”

Benito also told the outlet that he and Lukas Gage are friends, so it was easy to send him the script. “He knew exactly what we wanted to do,” the comedian explained. “That scene in the car was so hard to do, but I think the fact that we knew each other and had chemistry and just felt immediately comfortable, it made it really powerful for me and for him as well.” This duo is about to change lives.

During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Benito called Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang his “favorite people” and his “heroes.” He joked, “Wearing a harness between Matt and Bowen was one of the greatest experiences of my life.” (They play a psychotic couple in the series.)
