Did Olivia And Sabrina Work It Out On The Remix? Investigating Their Grammys Interaction

Livvies and Carpenters (me) are losing their minds today after seeing that viral clip of Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter seemingly catching up at the Grammys. This is the first Olivia and Sabrina crumb we’ve gotten since the 2022 Met Gala, and that one was just a photo of Olivia leaning toward Sabrina. It’s been four years now since Olivia and her curly-haired High School Musical costar Joshua Bassett split, he moved on with Sabrina, and then they all wrote a billion songs about it.

Olivia, of course, accidentally started the Gen Z pop culture scandal by crooning “And you’re probably with that blonde girl who always made me doubt / She’s so much older than me, she’s everything I’m insecure about.” As we all recall, Sabrina responded to “driver’s license” with “Skin” weeks later. In the response track, she taunted, “He’s on my / All on my all on my all on my skin” and “Don’t drive yourself insane.” I’m a Sabrina stan and I’m the first to say that was the cringiest moment of her career.

But perhaps the drama is officially behind the girlies now? After all, they’ve both had new relationships and albums since then. So, are Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter friends now? Here’s an update.

Are Olivia Rodrigo And Sabrina Carpenter Friends Now? Grammys Hug Explained

Did Olivia Rodrigo And Sabrina Carpenter Talk At The Grammys?

I dare say… war is over?! Maybe? Although it’s a super short and blurry video, the pop girlies were spotted hugging and talking during the broadcast. It looks like Olivia stopped by Sabrina’s table to chat for a minute. (I’m assuming she congratulated Sabrina on her two Grammys.) They notably didn’t pose for any photos together, and it seems like the interaction was brief. While I’m guessing there’s no more ~active beef~ here, these two are probably never gonna be BFFs, considering all they went through a few years ago.

After Sabrina famously responded to “driver’s license” with “Skin,” Olivia shared her thoughts in an interview. She was asked if she’d ever “write a response song to the response song” and replied: “Oh! Interesting question. I actually don’t know her at all.” Oof. She added, “I think we’ve met once or twice in passing, but I’ve never had a conversation with her, so I don’t think I could write a song that was meaningful or emotional about somebody I don’t know.” This was such a masterfully petty, yet PR-savvy response for an 18-year-old. Still shook.

Despite all the messiness, Olivia insisted in August 2021 that she had no hard feelings toward Sabrina. “I don’t really subscribe to hating other women because of boys,” she told Variety. “I think that’s so stupid, and I really resent that narrative that was being tossed around.”

Long before the teen drama saga of 2021, Olivia and Sabrina were just two Disney gals, who seemed to be friendly with each other. When they were tweens, Olivia was on Bizaardvark and Sabrina was starring in Girl Meets World. It’s clear that Olivia was a fan of Sabrina’s back then, because there are multiple old videos of her gushing about the “Taste” singer.

In one Instagram Live from around October 2017, Olivia responded to a fan’s request to sing Sabrina’s song, “Why.” She got visibly excited and asked, “Guys, did you see her on Jimmy Fallon? That was SO cool.” Young Olivia added, “I was like, ‘Yes, go Sabrina!” When another fan wrote that they love Sabrina, Olivia said, “Girl, saaame” and started softly singing “Why.” Crying.

Well, I’m thrilled that two of my favorite artists in the world appear to be on speaking terms again. Beef is exhausting. I hope and pray for a collab.
