Just one week ahead of the Love Island USA season 7 finale, Cierra Ortega left the villa without much explanation. During episode 30, narrator Iain Stirling announced that she’d left due to a “personal situation” and that Nic Vansteenberghe was back to square one, officially single again. (Cierra and Nic had just recently “closed off” their relationship and were the most solid couple in the villa this season.) Nic seemed pretty rattled after receiving the news of Cierra’s sudden exit — it’s unclear what details he got. “I think now that my strongest connection has gone, I will figure it out from here,” he told the guys. “I was not expecting this.” In a confessional, he added that his “mind was clear” ahead of Cierra leaving. “I knew what the future would look like,” he said. “And now I’m lost.”
Cierra’s departure came after several days of heated online debate about some of her past hurtful social media posts. According to alleged screenshots resurfacing on TikTok and Reddit, two of her Instagram posts contained a slur that’s offensive to people of East Asian descent. So, why did Cierra Ortega leave Love Island? Did the producers kick her out, or was it her decision? Here’s a breakdown of Cierra’s social media posts controversy and her response to the backlash.
Why Did Cierra Ortega Leave Love Island USA? Exit, Controversy Explained
What Happened To Cierra Ortega On Love Island?
Over the past week, Love Island fans discovered those alleged racist posts, and many called for producers to take Cierra off the show. (They’d already removed Yulissa Escobar for a similar reason in the second episode.) In a January 2015 Instagram post, Cierra appeared to use the C slur to describe her smile, and she allegedly used the same slur in February 2023 when posting an IG Story about getting Botox. After these screenshots went viral, the Love Island season 7 star lost more than 200,000 followers in about two days, and fans set up a Change.org petition calling for her removal from the show. Over 17,000 people signed. It’s unclear if producers listened to the feedback and removed Cierra from the show, or if they gave her the information and allowed her to make the decision herself.

On July 9, Cierra shared a nearly five-minute “accountability video” as well as a written statement on her Story. “While I was in the villa, there were some posts that resurfaced from my past where I was very naively using an incredibly offensive and derogatory term,” she says in the video. “I want to first start by addressing not just anyone that I have hurt or deeply offended, but most importantly, the entire Asian community. I am deeply, truly, honestly, so sorry. I had no idea that the word held as much pain, as much harm, and came with the history that it did or I never would have used it.”
Cierra emphasized that she “had no ill intention” when she used the slur, but added, “That’s absolutely no excuse because intent doesn’t excuse ignorance. It just doesn’t and I just need you to know that I am sorry.”
Cierra revealed that that her family is receiving death threats and having ICE called on them right now. “My family doesn’t feel safe in their own home,” she said. “I’m receiving death threats… there’s no need to fight hate with hate. I don’t think that’s justice.”
In her written statement, she reiterated: “I do not, and have never, condoned racism or the repression of any cultural group in any form. I would never intentionally use any word, especially a slur, to tear down anyone’s culture or community.”
Before Cierra responded herself, her parents shared a statement in an Instagram Story on her account. They described this situation as “one of the most painful weeks of our lives.”
“We’re not here to justify or ignore what’s surfaced,” her parents wrote. “We understand why people are upset, and we know accountability matters. But what’s happening online right now has gone far beyond that. The threats. The cruel messages. The attacks on her family, her friends, even her supporters, it’s heartbreaking.”
They added, “It’s uncalled for. And no one deserves that kind of hate, no matter what mistake they’ve made.” They noted that Cierra is “still away” and “hasn’t had the chance to process any of this or speak for herself.”
“When she returns, we believe she’ll face this with honesty, growth, and grace,” the statement continued. “While she’ll always be our little girl, she’s also a woman, one who will take responsibility in her own time and her own voice. Until then, we’re simply asking for compassion. For patience. For basic human decency.”
What Did Producers Tell The Love Island Cast About Cierra Leaving?

After Casa Boy Zak was dumped from the villa, he spilled the tea on TikTok and shared what the cast learned about Cierra’s departure. “When Cierra left, the producers gathered us all together,” he recalled. “They said, ‘Unfortunately, Cierra has broken some of the policies and our guidelines and she will no longer be here in the villa. That is the only information we can give you guys.’” He explained that they had a basic understanding of why she left, but weren’t given exact details.
“So when we were all in there, we didn’t really know what was going on,” he continued. “But that is all they said to us. And if we needed someone to speak to, we can speak to them.”
Zack noted that Nic was “really upset” when that happened. “But at the same time, he couldn’t really be super upset or he couldn’t express how he felt about the situation until he found out what she had done or said,” he added. “At the end of the day, as much as you want to feel sorry for somebody, if you know they got removed from a show for saying something offensive, you can’t really feel sorry for them until you know what it is.”
