I like to think that society, as a general, is starting to become more sexually explorative. We’re adding “sex positive” to our dating profiles, we’ve made “hawk tuah” girl a cultural phenomenon, and we’re collectively scream-singing, “Is somebody gonna match my freak?” So now that we’re all in the mood, it’s the best time to have the talk again. No, no, not that talk (we’re well past that) — the anal talk.

Okay, I know we’ve been here before. We’ve discussed how to have painless anal sex, different anal sex positions, and even how to eat ass — all at length. But this is all just scratching the surface (or the rim, if you will). There’s so much more to anal sex and the treasure trove of pleasure that it can give you. And I’m not just speaking from personal experience because, at the end of the day, I don’t have the real equipment that takes anal pleasure from deliciously satisfying to overwhelmingly gratifying — yes, I’m talking about the prostate.

Men and most trans women are born with a prostate, which is a small gland that’s below the bladder and in front of (you guessed it) the rectum. Technically, it helps a person produce fluids that are crucial to semen, but for the sake of this conversation, it’s basically considered the G-spot for those who have a prostate. And again, you don’t have to take my word for it. Science journalist Wendy Zukerman and her team at Gimlet conducted a survey on 16,000 cisgender men — and it’s not just your usual “you should try anal!” There’s a lot more to anal pleasure than you’d think. So, if you have a prostate, or have sex with someone with a prostate, make sure to take copious notes.

Men Are Anally Masturbating More Than You’d Think

We know men aren’t the best at being open and vulnerable when it comes to sex — especially when it comes to the backdoor entrance. I thought it was because they wanted nothing to do with their butt, but it turns out more than 50% of straight, cisgender men reported having tried anal masturbation at some point, which is very refreshing to hear.

Men Of All Ages Have Tried Anal Penetration

Anal penetration isn’t just a new “trend” that the youngins are trying these days. Forty percent of the survey’s participants said they had taken part in partnered anal penetration before, which means with either fingers, toys, or a penis. And it wasn’t just 20 and 30-year-olds. Even men well over 50 said they’ve experimented with some anal play.

Anal Play Leads To More Frequent And Enjoyable Orgasms

According to the survey, men were more likely to orgasm more often and enjoy those orgasms more during anal play than any other type of sexual activity. Yup, that means more than blow jobs or vaginal penetration. So, if you have a partner with a prostate and you’re trying to help them get their orgasms to the next level it might be time for a finger up the butt.

Everyone Has Different Reactions To Anal Play

Even though studies showed a strong connection between most respondents and anal play, that doesn’t mean everyone across the board is going to be into it. Which means, of course, that before you try to put your fingers, penis, or toys into someone’s asshole, you’re going to want to have a very in-depth conversation about boundaries. And if you’re both on board, you might just be opening the door to some next-level sex. Your partner (and their booties) will thank you.
