Meteorology geeks and astrology freaks, start your engines because there’s a lunar eclipse coming in hot. And not just any eclipse, a total lunar eclipse of a blood moon in Virgo, which sounds like the name of a song from the Twilight soundtrack but weirdly isn’t. Before we get into science and shit, I’d just like to take a moment of appreciation for the moon. Like, the sun gets a lot of flowers, and rightfully so, because baby can only do seasonal depression for so long. But the moon? She’s actually the chill, cool, mysterious hottie of the solar system who everyone wants to talk to at the party because she doesn’t need to be the center of attention. So what does Madame Luna have in store for March 2025’s celestial surprise? Here’s everything to know about the total blood moon lunar eclipse.
March 13, 2025, Total Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse Details
What time is the lunar eclipse?
The eclipse begins on the evening of March 13 or the early morning hours of March 14, depending on what state you’re located in across the US. For example, in New York City, the moon will start to move into place around midnight on March 13, whereas in Los Angeles, it should hit just before 9 p.m. The maximum eclipse peaks around three hours after the event sets into motion. You can use TimeAnd Date.com to find the exact time in your city.
Do I need glasses for the total lunar eclipse or blood moon?
No protective glasses are necessary for a lunar eclipse, unlike the ones you def need for a solar eclipse (despite what the literal President does).
What is a total lunar eclipse?
A total lunar eclipse is when the earth passes between the sun and the moon, causing the earth’s umbra (AKA shadow) to completely cover the moon, making it appear darker to us little people down here. Come on, rudimentary science!
What is a blood moon?
When the moon is hanging between its besties, the Earth, and the sun, some sunlight from sunrise and sunset bends around the Earth’s body to illuminate the moon. Because the lightwaves are working overtime to get to the moon, they are stretched out, making them appear a reddish brown. This is why the moon is considered a Blood Moon instead of its usual bright white.
Since this can only happen during the infrequent times when the Earth, moon, and sun’s paths cross during a total eclipse (versus a partial eclipse where the moon hangs in the Earth’s outer shadow, the penumbra), a blood moon is rare.
How does the blood moon affect my astrological sign?
@haleycometastrology IS YOUR SIGN BEING ECLIPSED OR JUST HAVING AN ECLIPSE STORY? 🌚🌝 #astrology #lunareclipse #solareclipse #eclipse #eclipse ♬ original sound – Haley Comet Astrology
The blood moon will impact those whose first house is in Virgo most because the lunar eclipse’s positioning is taking place in Virgo. So, my favorite little control freak perfectionists, get ready for a possibly intense reckoning of your identity, where it may feel like you’re stepping into a whole new era.
It’s also a big night for Geminis, Sagittarius, and Pisces (the sun’s placement for the event). As astrologer Hayley Comet put it, for those who have personal placements or angles (sun, moon, Venus, Mars, Ascendant, IC, or Descendant) in Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, or Pisces, you are going to “be eclipsed” tonight, just like the moon. Okay, why am I a little scared rn??? Hayley says not to panic, though, even though a “dramatic, drastic” life change is OTW. The only thing to do now is trust the universe and surrender or release to whatever unignorable energy is about to smack you in the face and make big changes in love, career, and new beginnings.
