Last night, I celebrated the 76th Emmy Awards from my couch, scarfing down some lovely takeout pad Thai and sipping a Thai iced tea as I professionally judged all the celebs’ outfits. While I know that the award show technically wasn’t a fashion competition, Quinta Brunson and Selena Gomez won. Fortunately, it was a pretty exciting night, and I enjoyed more than just the fashion. Liza Colón-Zayas and Anna Sawai made history, Reese Witherspoon made an extremely important announcement, and Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri shared a sweet moment… I may or may not be shipping them still. If you didn’t make it a priority to watch the show, shame on you. But here’s everything you missed at the 2024 Emmys, because I’m kind and generous.
Everything You Missed At The 2024 Emmys
Reese Witherspoon Announced She’s Collabing With A Real Housewife
The collab you didn’t know you were missing! When chatting with Laverne Cox at the Emmys, Reese revealed that she recently sat next to a Real Housewife on a flight, and they’re low-key working together now. “We might have a Hello Sunshine project cooking now, but I can’t say anything,” she teased. (Hello Sunshine is her media company for the those who aren’t Reese stans.) “But it was cool,” Reese said. “It was really cool.”
Don’t get too excited though… she’s a fake fan. Reese admitted, “I have never watched it. I feel like it’s like, I can’t catch up.” One thing I’ve learned about TV is you can always catch up. You just have to be super dedicated and have no regard for your mental health or productivity.
There Were A Few “Childless Cat Lady” References
JD Vance’s preposterous “childless cat lady” comment lives on. Murphy Brown star Candice Bergen presented at the award show and reminded everyone that back in 1992, Vice President Dan Quayle criticized her character for becoming a single mother. She quipped, “Today, a Republican candidate for vice president would never attack a woman for having kids. So, as they say, my work is done.” Candice added a “Meow” for a good measure.
When the Only Murders crew came up to present the first award of the night, Selena Gomez giggled at Steve Martin and Martin Short roasting each other before chiming in with her own roast: “Let me say what an honor it is to work with two guys who are this far away from being childless cat ladies.”
Jeremy Allen White Made Ayo Edebiri Emotional
Jeremy Allen White won Lead Actor in a Comedy Series because the Emmys people just cannot get enough kitchen shots and Carmy panic attacks. “My beautiful cast, I love you forever,” he said to his costars when he accepted the award. “I want us to be in each other’s lives forever. I love you so dearly.” We got to see Ayo’s reaction, and girlie 100 percent looked like she was holding back tears.
Liza Colón-Zayas And Anna Sawai Made History
Liza became the first Latina woman to win the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series! At the end of her acceptance speech, she remarked, “Thank you for giving me a new life with this show, and to all the Latinas who are looking at me, keep believing and vote. Vote for your rights.”
Shogun star Anna Sawai also made history by becoming the first actress of Asian descent to win Lead Actress in a Drama Series. “This is to all the women who expect nothing and continue to be an example to everyone,” she said while accepting her award. I hope you party hard and show off those Emmy statuettes, queens.
There Was A Hilarious Schitt’s Creek Reunion
Dan and Eugene Levy really understood the hosting assignment; I was guffawing quite a bit. At the end of the night, they brought out their Schitt’s Creek costar, Annie Murphy, to present the last award. “They said the shining star of Schitt’s Creek is going to present the final award of the night, so-” she started to say before Eugene interjected with “There’s been a little confusion here, Annie.”
Annie replied, “I know, and that’s fine, you can stay on stage, but just kind of scooch back a little bit.” But Dan explained that the “shining star” label was in reference to Catherine O’Hara, who played their mother on the show. Catherine then joined her fake fam onstage to present outstanding comedy series. Oh, Schitt’s Creek, you will always be one of the best shows to ever grace my TV.
