It’s been a tough awards season for Wicked stans like myself, so I’ve been manifesting a happy ending for this cinematic masterpiece at the Oscars (the Oz-cars, if you will). Unfortunately, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have yet to take home any Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress wins this awards season, and director Jon Chu’s been mostly ignored, aside from his Critics Choice Awards win.
Wicked got 10 Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture. The musical adaptation film is tied with The Brutalist and only trailing behind Emilia Pérez, which somehow got 13 noms, despite loads of backlash. If you ask me, Wicked deserved to win all 10 categories, but especially Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, Best Visual Effects, and the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories.
Following the Oscar nominations, Cynthia shared reflections about the special moment on Instagram. “Moments like this don’t come along very often, and when they do, it is sacrilege to let them pass by without a moment of gratitude,” she wrote. “I am grateful to be a part of something that makes people feel seen.” Ariana opened up her nom during a Jimmy Kimmel Live interview. “It was quite surreal,” she recalled. “When they announced mine, I was a mess. I almost collapsed.”
I need to process my fury and depression, so let’s go through the Oscars 2025 Wicked snubs together, shall we?
Wicked Oscars 2025 Snubs: Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo
Did Ariana Grande And Cynthia Erivo Win Oscars For Wicked?
I fear Ariana lost the Best Supporting Actress category to Zoe Saldaña, as expected. (Zoe’s won this category throughout the entire 2025 awards season.) I thought Cynthia was gonna lose Best Actress to Demi Moore, but she lost it to Mikey Madison?!?! I don’t think anyone expected that.
Wicked also lost Best Makeup and Hairstyling to The Substance, but I can’t be too mad about that one. The Substance looks literally gave me nightmares for weeks, so I’d say those hair and makeup folks understood the assignment. However, I am upset about Wicked losing Best Visual Effects to Dune: Part Two because… I’m a girl and *whispers* I just don’t care about Dune that much.
Which Oscars Did Wicked Win?
Wicked‘s Paul Tazewell made history as the first Black man to win Best Costume Design at the Oscars!! “This is absolutely astounding,” Paul said during his emotional acceptance speech. (I sobbed the whole time he was on stage.) “Thank you Academy for this very significant honor. I’m the first Black man to receive the costume design award for my work on Wicked. I’m so proud of this.” This was SUCH a meaningful and beyond well-deserved W.
The Wicked crew also took home Best Production Design (thank goodness)!! Nathan Crowley and Lee Sandales won the award for their incredible work on the film.
Welp, congrats to the Wicked crew on their wins! Hopefully, the second movie wins more.
