Wicked is curing my election x daylight savings brand of depression — there truly has never been a more effective coping mechanism. I sobbed through most of the extraordinary movie, swiftly bought another ticket to go see it again, and now, I’m streaming the soundtrack on repeat. I highly recommend making Wicked your whole personality. Sadly though, the two hours and forty minutes of film magic only covers HALF the Broadway musical, so we’re left wanting more. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s version of “For Good” exists, but we don’t get to hear it yet. That hurts. If you’re already dreaming about the second installment, I see you: Here’s everything to know about Wicked Part 2, including the release date, cast, and plot.

Wicked Part 2: Release Date, Plot, Cast

Is Wicked Part 2 Already Filmed?

Yes, parts one and two were shot back-to-back… I doubt it would’ve been easy to rebuild their extravagant Oz set. Wicked was originally supposed to be just one movie, but director Jon Chu decided to divide the story into two films to bring “even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these characters.” (I was skeptical about this choice at first, but having seen part 1, thank goodness they didn’t cut anything.) Filming for both parts began in December 2022 and didn’t wrap until January 2024, due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

When Is Wicked Part 2 Coming Out?

Part 2 will be out on November 21, 2025… yup, they’re making us wait a whole year even though THEY ALREADY HAVE THE MATERIAL. This is just rude and inconsiderate to those of us who need the movie immediately.

All our faves will be back to reprise their roles in part 2! Expect to see goddesses Cynthia and Ariana again as well as the loml, Jonathan Bailey, Ariana’s man, Ethan Slater, Jeff Goldblum (the best wizard ever), my queens Michelle Yeoh and Marissa Bode, and of course, the real stars of the movie, Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James. (No new casting announcements have been made as of now!)

Part 2 explores how Elphaba eventually becomes wicked and how Glinda ultimately becomes good. After Madame Morrible convinces all of Oz that Elphaba is evil, the Ozians are terrified of her. Glinda leans into her ~Glinda the Good~ image and also basically forces Fiyero into an engagement… but his heart lies with someone else. (Hint: She is green.) He finds Elphaba and they acknowledge their feelings for each other, but sadly, their romantic time is cut short because of Madame Morrible’s scheme to catch Elphaba. She uses a cyclone to bring Dorothy to Oz and a flying house to crush Nessa. That’s when Elphaba and Glinda meet again and fight over Fiyero and Glinda giving Nessa’s special shoes to Dorothy.

In the end, Elphaba and Glinda do forgive each other, hence “For Good.” Although Dorothy throwing water on Elphaba appears to melt her, Elphaba’s actually faking her death and running off with Fiyero (who’s now a Scarecrow), but Glinda is unaware of this key info. Not to mention, we discover that Elphaba was the wizard’s biological daughter this whole time, so he’s low-key been trying kill his own daughter. Oopsie.

So yeah, there’s plenty of plot left for the second movie!!
