Only 361 days left until Wicked: Part 2, but who’s counting? I now spend basically all my free time going to see Wicked: Part 1 and belting “The Wizard and I” to Cynthia Erivo’s version. (Apologies to my neighbors.) Like every other Wicked and Wizard of Oz fan, I’m also very busy obsessing over Dorothy’s blip-like cameo in part one and wondering about her potential expanded role in part two. Is the queen of following the yellow brick road gonna have more of a presence in the movie than she does in the Broadway show? And if so, who’s playing Dorothy in Wicked: Part 2? While we’re at it, we also need to discuss why Dorothy (Wicked: Part 1 version) is wearing silver slippers and not ruby slippers. Because what the fuck.
Dorothy’s Role In Wicked: Part 2, Explained
Is Dorothy In Wicked: Part 2?
TBD because in the Broadway show, Dorothy just appears as a silhouette. She’s featured toward the end of the musical when she encounters Elphaba and “melts” her with a bucket of water. That being said, director John Chu did turn the musical into two long ass movies, and we know there’s some added material in both installments. It’s definitely possible that Dorothy will be more than just a shadow in the second Wicked film. The Kansas girlie actually has a cameo (at least her back does) at the beginning of Wicked: Part 1 alongside the Lion, Scarecrow, and Tin Man, but interestingly, no one’s credited for playing her.
During a recent chat with Variety, John addressed the pressing Dorothy question. “I won’t say whether she’s a character, necessarily, in movie two,” he said. “There’s a part of me that wants everyone’s Dorothy to be the whatever Dorothy they want. And yet, there is interaction and some crossover. So I’ll leave that up to Part Two.” Hmmm. It’s giving someone is playing Dorothy and he doesn’t wanna ruin the surprise.
Who Would Play Dorothy In Wicked: Part 2?
Of course, we don’t know if anyone’s playing Dorothy in the second film, but there’s already a popular theory about who was cast. A fan on Twitter shared photos of Alisha Weir, the 15-year-old star of Abigail, posing at the Wicked premiere and wrote, “STREETS SAYING ABIGAIL PLAYING DOROTHY IN WICKED PART 2?????” I mean, our only evidence is that she’s a teen with brown hair who was at the Wicked premiere, but hey, I’ll go with it.
While I think Alisha is a not bad theory, I have to agree with another fan who thinks Charli XCX should play Dorothy because “then she and ariana can sing sympathy issa knife.” I do believe we need the Broadway version of that.
Why Are Dorothy’s Slippers Silver In The Wicked Movie?
Fans noticed something very odd about Dorothy’s slippers in Wicked: Part 1… they’re silver, not ruby red. Apparently, the slippers are also silver in L. Frank Baum’s 1900 book, The Wizard of Oz, and costume designer Paul Tazewell just wanted to honor that. “They’re not ruby,” he told People. “In the book, they were these odd little silver boots.” Who knew?? The shoes were only red in the 1939 movie because the costume designer, Gilbert Adrian, was excited about going technicolor and wanted to make the most of color in the film.
Some of you (me) didn’t read the book and it shows.
