Ludacris had a lot to say about astrology on TikTok this past week. The “Virgo” rapper posted a video declaring the difference between August and September Virgos, which caused D-R-A-M-A and debate for his fellow earth signs. Sharing his Virgo-ness isn’t anything new for Ludacris. ICYMI, he shared a picture on social media over six years ago with fellow Earth sign actor Lorenz Tate and a photo with Virgo Queen Beyonce in 2014 in which they all honor their star sign attributes. Don’t worry — both Lorenz Tate and Beyonce are September Virgos!
Since Ludacris has sparked an online debate: Are August or September Virgos better? According to Ludacris, August Virgos are more attention-seeking, chatty, and practical, while September Virgos have “analytical prowess” and are ” good listeners.” As an astrologer, let me break it down.

Understanding The Three Types Of Virgos
As an astrologer, I have noticed that people are super excited to tell the world that they are Virgos. Tbh, I get it because we need organization and compassion in our lives. Also, there are more Virgos on Earth than any other birth sign. According to Reader’s Digest, most babies in the U.S. are born between September 9 to 20. Who runs the world? Virgo.
The sign’s planetary ruler is Mercury, so there are technically three types of Virgos: Virgo with Mercury in Leo, Virgo, or Libra.
- Mercury in Leo might be extroverted and excitable,
- Mercury in Virgo peeps are reflective
- Mercury in Libra got that rizz about them that’s hard to resist.
The earth sign depends on where one’s Mercury is placed in the birth chart, including the time, date, and year when they were born. Mercury, the planet of communication, is extremely vital because it not only rules the sign of Virgo but also depicts how we express ourselves. But it affects Virgos a lot. Also, it’s important to note that one’s complete chart can make a huge difference in one’s personality — especially the moon and rising sign.
Going further, the decan of sun signs is essential, too. It also creates three different types of a sign. When Luda says, “August Virgos never shut the fuck up and don’t care about anyone else’s opinions or thoughts on anything,” and then adds, “September Virgos are relatively quiet in a new setting and good listeners, slightly stubborn, but they try to connect more with others,” he was probs talking about decans, a subdivision of a zodiac sign.
A Deep Dive Into Virgo Personalities
Each decan is composed of 10 out of the 30 degrees they possess, making 3 in total. Did I lose you yet, or are you still interested? The reason why astrologers use this method is to do a deep dive into one’s unique personality. The first decan usually consumes those born between August 22/23 (depending on when Virgo season begins) and ends around September 2.
The first decan is ruled by Mercury, making people born on these dates more chatty and perfectionist. Celeb examples of such Virgo elements are Jennifer Coolidge (who was born on August 28), Blake Lively (whose birthday is August 25), and Keke Palmer (who was born on August 26 Virgo).
The second decan, in which Ludacris was born (September 11), falls between September 3 and 12 and is ruled by authoritative Saturn, allowing them to be reflective and hardworking. They’re the authority on matters and have a firm resolve. Other famous peeps in this decan include Beyonce (her b-day is September 4), Larenz Tate (who was born on September 8), and Karl Lagerfeld (whose birthdate is September 10.
Finally, the third decan, ruled by the planet Venus, occurs between September 13 to 22/23, bringing love, harmony, and charm to these Virgos. A few prominent third decan Virgos include Billy Porter, Bill Murray (both born on September 21), and Nick Jonas (whose birthday is September 16). So, as you can see, every birth month and sign is super complex.
Virgo Cusps Explained
In the viral video, Luda mentions “cusps”— a controversial topic in the astrology community. Cusps are considered at the beginning and end of each sun sign’s transit. Some astrologers believe that the sign, in its early and late stages, can take on the influence of the one it’s leaving and entering. Many stargazers think that the closer a sign is to the beginning of its season, the more of the sign the person encompasses. Conversely, if they’re born at the end of the sun sign’s month, they embody less of that vibe.
If Ludacris believes in cusps, then I welcome it. Many OG astrologers do, too. The reason is that you will have planets in signs before and following the sun’s stint in each constellation, which can create a cusp-like feel. I get what you’re saying, Luda.
Now, Ludacris was born on September 11, 1977. He was born in the second decan, and his Mercury is retrograde in Virgo. He is a natural-born thinker, listener, intellectual, and intuitive (because his Mercury is retrograde). So, yes, he is who he describes himself perfectly (as any and every Virgo would).
Is there a difference between August and September Virgos?
The social media video ends with Ludacris asking his followers and fans, “Now, which one do y’all prefer? Make sure you give the right answer because I am a September Virgo.” Besides, from the astrology perspective, people were left wondering: Is there an actual difference between August and September Virgos? I sought out the real tea by interviewing both “kinds” of Virgos.
“I find that a lot of the stereotypes of Virgos are more apparent in those born in August rather than September,” tarot reader Sarah Potter says. “A little Type A, more outwardly perfectionist, not a hair out of place, always put together and streamlined with an eye for every minute detail, nothing goes unnoticed.”
Brittany T. says that being an early Virgo and having a Mercury in Virgo birthday falling right in the back-to-school zone was always a combination of thrilling and frustrating.” Her parties were “meticulously planned,” which TBH denotes a hyper-organized Virgo IMHO.
“I think as an August Virgo myself — without tooting my own horn — I do feel we bring that blend of practicality and expressiveness to the table that Luda’s talking about,” Jla S. tells Betches. “One place where I think Luda has it backward is in saying that September Virgos try to make more of a connection with others! I think we, August Virgos, are excellent at building those heartfelt connections! After all, Leos rule the heart, don’t they?!”
While Spencer shares that she does find September Virgos are more relationship driven. “I try to make the best out of partnerships and try to make them work.”
Overall, the answer is somewhat biased to Luda’s declaration. But there is no definitive answer. Just be sure to comment September Virgos are the GOAT on his social media posts!
