Taylor Swift Announced She Now Owns Her Masters — But Does That Mean No More 'Reputation TV'?

Welp, I hope you’ve got your clown makeup ready, because Reputation (Taylor’s Version) might not even happen. Taylor shared the exciting news in a letter that “all the music [she] has ever made now belongs to [her].” So, Swifties around the world can officially stop spending all their free time obsessing over release date theories on TikTok because it looks like “Taylor’s Version” might not be necessary anymore.

As everyone who hasn’t been living under a rock knows, Taylor began rerecording her first six albums back in 2019 after music manager villain Scooter Braun bought all her masters without her consent. She began creating “Taylor’s Versions” of her albums, so that she could have ownership of them. So far, Blondie’s released the new versions of Fearless, Red, Speak Now, and 1989, but fans have been impatiently waiting on her 2017 album, Reputation, as well as her debut 2006 album, Taylor Swift.

Does Taylor Swift Own Her Master Recordings Now?

Yes, all of the music Taylor’s ever made now belongs to her. From music videos to concert films to album art and photography to unreleased songs, it’s all hers now. Blondie posted a letter on her website detailing her thoughts and big emotions as she processes this massive win. “I almost stopped thinking it could ever happen after 20 years of having the carrot dangled and then yanked away,” she writes. “To say this is my greatest dream come true is actually being pretty reserved about it.”

How Much Did Taylor Swift Pay For Her Masters?

The deal details haven’t been publicized yet. According to USA Today, any rumored price range reported is “highly inaccurate.”

Taylor confirmed in her letter that the money she earned from re-recording four of her albums and The Eras Tour was how she purchased back the rights from the private equity firm Shamrock Capital, which had acquired the master rights to Taylor’s first six albums in 2020 from Scooter Braun.

Is Taylor Swift Going To Release Reputation (Taylor’s Version)?

Taylor addressed concerns directly in her letter on whether Rep (TV) is still happening. “Full transparency: I haven’t even re-recorded a quarter of it.” Wow, it’s not like Swifties have been waiting for this news for three centuries or anything.

She went on to explain that the album was “so specific” to that time in her life that it was a challenge to remake it. “To be perfectly honest, it’s the one album in those first 6 that I thought couldn’t be improved upon by redoing it… So I kept putting it off.” It’s giving when you procrastinated the assignment so long that you convince the professor it was a dumb assignment in the first place.

However, it does sound like she’s open to releasing the Vault tracks “if that’s something you guys would be excited about.” (Um, rude? Ofc that’s what we want.) Also, Taylor confirmed that she’s “already completely re-recorded my entire debut album.”

Taylor’s diamond dress at the 2022 MTV VMAs

Fans thought that Rep (TV) was coming soon back in 2022 when Taylor wore a diamond dress at the VMAs that resembled her dress in the “Look What You Made Me Do” music video. Obviously, that was either a coincidence or just a very cruel tease.

We got snippets of “Delicate (Taylor’s Version)” and “Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)”

Back in early August 2023, we got to hear a snippet of “Delicate (TV)” in season 2 episode 6 of The Summer I Turned Pretty. Later that month, Taylor also shared a part of “Look What You Made Me Do (TV)” in the trailer for the Prime Video drama, Wilderness. She then teased us again with another “LWYMMD (TV)” sync placement in a March 2024 commercial for the docuseries, The Dynasty: New England Patriots.

She referenced Reputation lyrics in a tweet ahead of the Eras Tour film premiere

In October 2023, Taylor thanked her fans for their support in a tweet on the day of her Eras Tour film premiere. Observant Swifties noticed that the tweet seems to contain some Rep hints. Taylor wrote, “Look what you genuinely made me do,” which seems like a reference to “LWYMMD,” as well as “Getting in the car now,” which makes us think about “Getaway Car.”

Taylor debuted “Look What You Made Me Do (TV)” in The Handmaid’s Tale

Just a few days ahead of the 2025 AMAs, Taylor premiered “LWYMMD” in season 6, episode 9 of The Handmaid’s Tale. Right at the beginning of the episode, the track plays as the handmaids rebel against the Commanders.
