The year was 2013. The vibes were Disney queens go rogue. Miley Cyrus twerked on Robin Thicke at the VMAs, and Selena Gomez made the radical choice to star in Harmony Korine’s raunchy film, Spring Breakers. (And in just a year or two, Ariana Grande would scandalize the world by licking a donut.) Mothers everywhere gasped in dismay at the Spring Breakers trailer, which featured fresh-out-of-Disney Selena, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Corine partying, hanging out with a creep (James Franco), and getting arrested. Those of us who were raised on High School Musical and Wizards of Waverly Place ate up this instant classic — it grossed over $30 million at the global box office from a $5 million budget.
That’s why I’m surprised we didn’t get news of a sequel sooner, but today is the big day!! More than a decade later, a Spring Breakers 2 has officially been announced and it’s titled Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain. Plus, there’s a very exciting cast attached, and it includes another former Disney star I stanned back in the day… My 13-year-old self is unwell right now. Here’s everything to know about Spring Breakers 2 including the release date, cast, and plot.
Devastatingly, there’s no release date yet, but let’s manifest a near-future premiere date, folks. It’s a good sign that the casting’s squared away and the movie’s in production! Still, I doubt we’re getting this movie before 2026.
Not to shock you all, but Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain, a so-called “bold new ride for Gen Z,” is also about a rebellious group of college gals who go on an unhinged spring break trip. Per the synopsis, “When their trip explodes out of control, they’re forced to outrun the chaos they’ve created.” Basically, we’re getting a remake and you won’t catch me complaining about it. I think we can all benefit from more Spring Breakers movies.
The producers of the original 2012 film, Chris Hanley and Jordan Gertner, are also producing the sequel, but there’s an all new cast: Bella Thorne, Ariel Martin, Grace Van Dien, and True Whitaker. Bella was quite literally born for this role… no notes on that casting. I fear I’m about to stream “TTYLXOX” on repeat to celebrate this news. (Okay, it would’ve been iconic if Olivia Rodrigo was the new Vanessa, considering the HSM connection, but what can ya do.) Interestingly, the OG director, Harmony Korine, isn’t involved in the sequel — Matthew Bright will replace him.
