'RHOP' Karen Huger Has Been Sentenced To One Year In Prison

Karen Huger has been in the hot seat since news broke of her alleged DUI arrest on March 19, 2024, just before filming began on season 9 of The Real Housewives of Potomac. Since then, the Grande Dame (the nickname Karen made sure police officers knew, according to released DUI camera footage) has been trying to fight the charges in a legal battle explored on the Bravo show.

Despite Karen’s legal team’s efforts to get the DUI cam footage suppressed and the case dismissed because of Karen’s emotional state related to the death of her parents, Karen was found guilty on five out of six DUI and DWI charges. These charges include negligently driving a vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner, failure to control vehicle speed on the highway to avoid an accident, and driving with a suspended registration. Karen and her legal team were “disappointed” with the conviction, which only excluded one reckless driving charge.

Instead of attending the RHOP reunion, Karen shared that she entered a treatment facility to address mixing alcohol with antidepressants in light of the court’s ruling.  She also fired her legal time and pleaded with the judge for leniency ahead of her sentencing, claiming she had been on more medication because of her parents’ passings (who died in 2017 and 2018) and because of the pressure of being “responsible leadership” on The Real Housewives. But the prosecutor on Karen’s case wrote in a public court filing that she believed Karen had been “emboldened” by not previously serving jail time on three prior DUI cases.

So, will Karen Huger go to jail? Here are the results of her sentencing.

After a conviction for a March 2024 DUI and DWI incident, Karen faced up to two years in prison. On February 26, Karen Huger has been sentenced to two years in jail, with one year suspended, over her DUI conviction by a Montgomery County, Maryland court. This sentencing means that Karen will serve one year of jail time (which could potentially be shortened by good behavior, as seen with Jen Shah).

The suspended portion of a sentence, according to legal experts, means that the convicted defendant has made a “legal arrangement” where they do not have to serve jail time despite being found guilty, but “may be sentenced for that crime at a future time if he or she commits another crime during a specified period.”

During the sentencing, the judge told Karen that she was “filled to the gills with alcohol” and that the court could not wait for a fifth offense to happen before giving Karen “jail time.” The judge noted Karen had been subject to four alleged DUI-related incidents in the past 17 years.

Karen apologized to the court and called the situation a “wake-up call” she planned to use to help others.

Will Karen be on season 10 of RHOP?

While Karen Huger’s date to report to jail is currently unknown, it feels unlikely she will be able to film the upcoming tenth season of The Real Housewives of Potomac. Season 9 began filming around the end of April 2024, so it’s likely season 10 will start in the spring of 2025.

Even if Karen has not begun serving her sentence by then, it’s possible she would be focused on arranging her affairs before incarceration (instead of on reality television). However, Karen did make a v dramatic cameo at the RHOP reunion in the midst of her legal battle, so Bravo arranging a special scene to send Karen off (and give her a chance to apologize to the fans) is not totally out of the cards.
