Karen Huger's DUI Cam Footage Was Just Released And— Oof!

Though this season of The Real Housewives of Potomac has been the lightest and brightest in years, it isn’t all fun and games for the entire cast. La Grande Dame Karen Huger, who is RHOP’s official matriarch and self-proclaimed HBIC, is facing serious legal concerns after a frightening accident in March of 2024.

Karen Huger is being charged with quite a few serious allegations revolving around the State of Maryland’s claim she was driving while drunk in her Maserati. Fans of RHOP will know there are at least eight citations, as noted with pink balloons in the “still to come” season preview by Karen’s adversary on RHOP, Jacqueline.

But unlike another recent Real Housewife DUI, Karen has not been able to share the scary details of what led to the incident that night. Viewers have noticed because of Karen’s careful strategy protecting herself during the ongoing case, she seemingly has not shown much remorse or accountability for what allegedly happened. Even though Karen hasn’t opened up, court filings, police statements released to the press, and now recently released body cam footage are telling a big story. Here’s the update on Karen Huger’s DUI for fans trying to figure out WTF went down.

Karen Huger DUI Timeline

All Of Karen Huger’s Released DUI Cam Footage

After Karen’s motion to suppress the footage obtained by police on the night of her DUI was shut down by the judge, the videos became public on December 19. In the videos, Karen is seen with her husband, Ray Huger, speaking to police about “where she was coming from.” Karen answered by pointing off camera. When asked, “What happened,” Karen replied “Actually, nothing really” before clarifying she was “run off the road” by another car (though she couldn’t identify the vehicle or driver). Karen does not answer the officer’s multiple inquiries as to “how much she drank tonight” but lets Ray suggest she “probably had a couple beers.” The police footage also includes images of the severe damage on the hood of Karen’s car. Together Ray and the police officer go back and forth about their then assumption Karen had hit the center median and tree on the road.

In another video where Karen is riding with a police officer, she explains that she is called “The Grande Dame of Potomac.” She says that she’s not sure why she got that nickname, joking that “Andy Cohen did that.” The officer did not respond.

In this snippet of body cam footage, a police officer explains Karen cannot remove her handcuffs. In response, Karen asks the officer if he knows who she is and then yells “I’m lit” as they catch her from falling while exiting their car.

In more police cam footage at what appears to be a police station, Karen has a contentious conversation with a law enforcement official who is off-camera. She asks repeatedly if he “wants Black people” and says she’s “really rich” and will be forced to “stay in jail for a year or two.” She later apologizes and says, “It’s not you” to the official, but calls herself “Thomas Jefferson’s concubine.”

Is Karen Huger’s DUI dismissed?

No, Karen Huger is still facing charges of DUI and DWI in relation to a single-vehicle collision with Karen at the wheel on March 19, 2024, just weeks before the ninth season of The Real Housewives of Potomac began production. The charges against Karen filed by the State of Massachusets are in response to Karen driving her 2017 Maserati across a highway median, several street signs, and eventually into a tree, as described by Karen in her statement following the accident the morning of March 20. TMZ first reported police officers on the scene described her driving in a “too fast, aggressive” manner that was unsafe for the road’s conditions. The charges Karen is facing include: driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving a vehicle while impaired by alcohol, recklessly driving a vehicle, negligently driving a vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner endangering property, life, and person, and several charges regarding speed such as failure to control vehicle speed on the highway to avoid a collision. In addition, Karen faces two charges related to her registration, which the star called “understandable.”

Why did Karen try to get her DUI dismissed?

On July 11, 2024, Karen’s legal team filed a motion with the court to have her DUI case dismissed, claiming that statements and evidence gathered at the scene were taken without reading Karen her Miranda rights. Karen’s account, as she told the court, claimed an officer told her she was not able to leave and interrogated her. The motion asked for evidence, such as her statements and body cam footage taken on March 19 to be suppressed.  They qualified the evidence as a result of “illegal search and seizure.”

The motion was dismissed by the judge when they agreed with the prosecution that Karen’s “roadside investigation” produced “free and voluntary statements” Karen made in front of police while being treated by EMS. In defending their case, the prosecution shared that officers on the scene described Karen as “unsteady on her feet, swaying, stumbling, and slurring her speech,” which was echoed by the person who called in the crash. After news first broke, Karen released a statement stating she was “emotional” after dinner with a girlfriend where they had talked about her recently deceased parents. Because of this, Karen said she was crying on the way home when she “saw a car heading right for me.” This is what caused her to “swerve” into a tree, but she was still “grateful” to be alive. Karen claims the car that almost hit her “just drove away!” On RHOP, Karen has remained extremely tight-lipped in light of the legal woes she working to mitigate.
