First of all, I would never listen to leaked music. Never. Unless we’re discussing “Fantasize” by Ariana Grande, which I did listen to repeatedly on TikTok. Although I’ve seen lots of chatter about a recent Tortured Poets Department leak, I haven’t heard the tunes myself. To be honest, I didn’t think the subject matter on this album would be a huge surprise — Taylor was in a six-year relationship with Joe, they had a rough split, and it seems like they talked about marriage but weren’t able to get there. Plenty of juicy material to pull from right there.
But. We all collectively decided to forget about her rebound, Mr. Matty Healy. It was a dark time. Most of us did not approve. If you recall, Taylor and Matty were mouthing secret messages to each other on stage, hanging out in the recording studio, and having a full-fledged little situationship for a while. But that’s all it was… right?? Um, maybe not. ‘Cause the streets are saying a lot of The Tortured Poets Department is about the 1975 singer. And Taylor might be hinting at that too with a mysterious QR code in London. Did she actually write her new album about Matty, not Joe??? Let’s get into it. Immediately.
This woman. My god. The London Tortured Poets Department QR code is on Brick Lane, a popular street in East London. More specifically, the code is located at the former location of the Truman Black Eagle Brewery. And YES, Truman Black is Matty’s Instagram username and alias. Coincidence? Anything’s possible, but the self-proclaimed “mastermind” usually pays attention to detail.
The people of Twitter aren’t really naming specific titles, but some have claimed that “80%” of the album is about Matty… somewhat hard to believe, but ya never know. One user did share the lyrics: “You smoked then ate seven bars of chocolate / We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist / I scratch your head, you fall asleep / Like a tattooed Golden Retriever.” If these are real lyrics, I fear they’re definitely about Matty. I can’t handle this information right now.
These two were supposedly only together for about a month last summer, and sources claimed that it was a casual thing. Perhaps it was the Chappell Roan kind of casual (not casual at all). Maybe they dated longer in secret? Or maybe Taylor’s just deeply affected by situationships like the rest of us.
