As an elder millennial, I, too, am rumbling and grumbling at this very youthful, shall we say, cast of Next Gen NYC. To be fair to us grumpy reality purists, Bravo isn’t exactly making love for the newbies easy by showing the most obnoxious clips of some of this new series’ young stars (such as crypto king Charlie Zakkour, who has already parasocially rubbed me the wrong way in about 30 seconds of airtime). But I can’t lie; some of the new stars are pretty interesting. What are Damon Dash’s businesses?
Damon Dash is the co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records, the famous music label still owned by Jay-Z. Damon’s share of the label was auctioned off to the State of New York in 2024 after Damon owed over $8 million in back taxes, according to New York State records as reported in the New York Post.
Damon also started Rocawear through the Roc-A-Fella label, though he sold his ownership to Jay-Z in 2005, and owns several businesses under the Dash Group umbrella, as well as Dame Dash Studios in the film and TV business.
What did Rachel Roy do?
Rachel Roy is a New York City fashion designer who became the center of some historic gossip at the 2012 Met Gala. As literally everyone with internet access is probably aware, Solange and Jay-Z allegedly got into an argument, as seen on surveillance footage that went viral, at the Met Gala afterparty. (Years later, Beyoncé would address the situation with the lyric “of course sometimes shit goes down when there’s a billion dollars on an elevator” on her 10/10 fire Nicki Minaj remix of “***Flaweless”.) Rumors quickly linked Rachel Roy to be a part of the incident, as Rachel was allegedly seen interacting with Jay-Z and Solange that night.
Beyoncé eventually dropped Lemonade, her iconic sixth album, in 2016, where she unpacks the hurdles she faced in her marriage, including cheating. In Bey’s certified triple platinum banger, Sorry, Beyoncé names “Becky with the Good Hair” as her husband’s mistress. Shortly after, Rachel Roy fueled rumors that she could’ve possibly been this woman when she posted a picture with the caption, “Good hair don’t care, but we will take good lighting, for selfies, or self truths, always. Live in the light #nodramaqueens.” Rachel quickly denied the allegation afterward, telling People her “fun and lighthearted” post was “misunderstood.”
What happened between Damon Dash and Rachel Roy?
Rachel Roy divorced Damon Dash in 2009, and the fallout was not friendly between the pair. Rachel filed for sole custody of their two daughters, which was granted in 2015, along with a three-year restraining order for herself against Damon and an order of protection for their children that allowed for supervised visits. They were married for four years after two years of dating. Rachel Roy was previously a fashion intern at Damon’s company, Rocawear.
The difficult legal battle continued into Ava’s teen years, when Damon and Rachel filed suits against each other, making claims in court about each of their parenting ability to try to win custody in 2019. In 2022, Damon requested a reduction in monthly childcare payments for his youngest child, Tallulah, citing reduced income due to the pandemic, according to court records as reported in the Daily Mail.
