Who Killed Abby In 'The Hunting Wives'? A Recap Of That Insane Ending

Admittedly, I’ve been spending all my free time binging the new Netflix soap series, The Hunting Wives. I highly recommend this show to anyone who enjoys unhinged drama, ridiculously exaggerated southern accents, a dash of mystery, and sapphic storylines galore. Honestly, we needed a TV show where all the men are abominations and all the women are gay. (Unfortunately, all the characters also pretend to espouse super conservative values.)

The story follows Sophie and her husband, Graham, who relocate from Massachusetts to a small conservative town in Texas, only to find themselves swept up in a world that revolves around a shady church, WLW affairs, and so many guns. Naturally, there’s a murder mystery at the heart of it all. Early in the season, we learn that a high school student named Abby has been found dead in the woods. There are plenty of suspicious folks and interesting theories about the murder, but the actual killer is low-key the most obvious suspect, in my opinion…

So, who killed Abby in The Hunting Wives? Let’s break down that wild ending.

First, everyone thinks Sophie killed Abby because her gun was the murder weapon. Pedophile Pastor Pete also becomes a suspect due to his habit of kidnapping and assaulting teenage girls. And after that, everyone’s attention turns to Jill since she always disapproved of her son dating Abby, and she called Abby the night of the murder. Plus, there was the whole ~she murdered Abby’s mom~ thing. That didn’t help her case!

But who’s actually Abby’s murderer? That would be Margo. Ya know, Sophie’s street-smart and narcissistic frenemy/girlfriend who seems extremely suspicious the whole time. (Every time someone tells her a new theory they have about the murderer, Margo encourages them, enthusiastically leading them astray.)

While I did expect Margo to be guilty of the crime, I certainly didn’t anticipate how the truth would come to light. It all starts with the creepy pastor telling Sophie that Abby had an abortion because Brad told him that his “girlfriend” had one. But! Brad had more than one girlfriend before Abby died. He was also seeing Margo, as we know.

Toward the end of the season, Sophie is confused when she finds tampons in Margo’s bathroom. She remembers that when they first met, Margo said she couldn’t use tampons. For whatever reason, the tampon thing is super suspicious to Sophie, and with a quick Google search, she discovers that women can’t use tampons right after they’ve had abortions. She confronts Brad and confirms that it wasn’t Abby who had an abortion.

Sophie then heads to Doctor Blevins (Margo’s doctor and secret dad who gave her a fake alibi for the night of the murder) and finds out that Margo convinced him to lie for her. Ultimately, Margo shot Abby to cover up her affair with Brad (a literal teenage boy) and her abortion. She confesses to the crime when Sophie confronts her about it.

What a journey! Kind of need season 2 immediately.
