For The 'We Were Liars' Stans: Everything To Know About Season 2

As a woman well into her twenties, I still live for psychological thriller YA TV adaptations, so the arrival of We Were Liars on Prime Video is a major blessing. Based on E. Lockhart’s bestselling 2014 novel, the series premiered on June 18 and instantly changed lives (mine). The story follows the ~perfect on the outside, fucked on the inside~ Sinclair family dynasty. Cadence, the oldest grandchild in the fam, suffers a mysterious traumatic accident and spends the season trying to piece together what happened to her. When she finally uncovers the truth and confronts her new reality, it’s a mindfuck, to say the least. Naturally, I finished all eight episodes in a few days, but mentally, I’m still wandering Beechwood Island, lost in the Sinclair family chaos, and trying to make sense of WTF happened in that final episode.

If you binged the show like I did, you’re probably already wondering: Will there be a We Were Liars season 2? Here’s everything we know about a potential upcoming season, including the release date, cast, and plot.

At this time, We Were Liars hasn’t officially been renewed yet. But not to fear: It’s the No. 1 show on Amazon, and fans obviously want more ASAP. The excellent news? Creators Julie Plec and Carina Daly MacKenzie are definitely on board for a second season. In a recent interview with Swoon, Julie explained that they intentionally ended season one with a cliffhanger to get people hooked and ready for season 2.Really, we just wanted the audience to know that the story didn’t have to be over,” she said. “[They] know that there’s a party that can keep going if they’re enjoying themselves. So hopefully, they did enjoy themselves and beg for more.” Yup, I can confirm I thoroughly enjoyed myself and am begging for more.

The showrunners told The Wrap that they’ve already had “endless conversations” with Prime Video about a renewal. “They are very supportive and just waiting on whatever data it is these algorithmic creators need to have before they write big check, so we’re looking forward to the data working in our favor,” Julie said. Keep watching, people!

Speaking to Variety, Carina echoed this optimism: “Emily wrote three books, and we love this world. We love our cast. We’d love the opportunity that exists for more story, so we’re hopeful that we’ll get to come back and do more.” That said, she added that “should this be a limited series,” she still thinks it’s a “beautiful story” as is.

We Were Liars Season 2 Plot: Is It Based On The Book Family Of Liars?

Assuming Prime Video green lights another season, the next installment will be based on Family of Liars, the second book in E. Lockhart’s series. Family of Liars is a prequel to We Were Liars and follows the Sinclair sisters when they were teenagers. In the second book, Carrie speaks to the ghost of her dead son, Johnny, and tells him about everything that happened when she was younger. “[Family of Liars] is the direction that we’ve planted the seeds for, for sure,” Julie told Swoon. Carina teased that season 2 would be “the Sinclair sister villain origin story.”

Since season 2 hasn’t been announced yet, the cast is TBD. But based on the ending of season one and the Family of Liars plot, it seems like Mamie Gummer (Carrie) and Joseph Zada (Johnny) would definitely return. Although the prequel doesn’t involve most of the characters from season one, the creators hinted to Swoon that the TV adaptation might change that. “We do love our present-day cast,” Carina said. “We wouldn’t want them to go anywhere either.” So, maybe Emily Alyn Lind (Cadence), Shubham Maheshwari (Gat), and Esther McGregor (Mirren) will be back after all? We’ll have to wait and see.
