Between Bree sleeping with a married professor, Lydia ending up engaged to Stephen, Lucy traumatizing Stephen’s little sister, and Chris drugging and assaulting Pippa, it’s hard to imagine this season of Tell Me Lies getting any darker. And yet, it will, according to showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer. In a recent interview about season 2 of the Hulu hit, she revealed that episode 7 could literally get her canceled. Apparently, half of the writers were very against a certain controversial plot twist, but it made the show anyway. So, what the fuck happens in season 2 episode 7 of Tell Me Lies? Here are all the fan theories, based on the hints Meaghan gave and hints in the episodes we’ve seen so far.
During a September 4 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Meaghan was asked what episodes or moments she’s most excited for fans to see. In response, she shared, “There is a twist in episode seven, a decision that Lucy makes. But I think if I get canceled, it will be because of this.” She explained that Lucy attempts to help Pippa, but her actions backfire. “And it’s a moment that I came into the room and I pitched it, and it immediately divided the writers room into two,” Meaghan recalled. “There were people that were like, “We have to do that, that’s great.” And then half of the room was like, “We absolutely cannot do that.” The showrunner ultimately decided to go through with it because it was polarizing.

Naturally, Reddit is abuzz with theories about this cancelation-inducing choice Lucy makes. Personally, I think Lucy will tell the school or authorities that Chris assaulted her. I think she’ll tell Pippa’s story as though it were her own, so Chris will face consequences. And a Redditer agrees with me: “I think Lucy will try to frame Chris for rape, either by arranging some kind of encounter between them which she can claim was rape, or by outright lying that he raped her.” They noted that the lying option “has more potential to be polarizing to the point of getting the show canceled.”

Other fans of the show think Lucy’s revenge will have nothing to do with reporting Chris. “My theory is that Lucy drugs Chris and humiliates him as payback for what he did to Pippa,” another user offers, adding that this would be a reason for Lydia to never forgive Lucy. I feel like that’s low-key darker than her lying and claiming Pippa’s story as her own… but anything’s possible with this show.
There’s another theory that Lucy just fails to keep Pippa’s secret. Someone else added in the predictions thread, “I think it has to be something that is pretty relatable since it’s SO polarizing. I believe she outs Pippa in some way either to the police or speaks about Pippa’s experience publicly and Pippa denies it.” They think Chris gets punished after that, and Lydia still holds it against Lucy.
