The Internet Is Divided Over Whether Billie Eilish’s Sneakers Are Mint Or Pink

I invite you to go on a little journey with me. In your mind, leave the hellscape of 2020 and think back to 2015. February, to be exact. A simpler time. A time when the biggest issue dividing us was not a deadly pandemic or future-defining election, but a photo of a dress. Rather, a photo of The Dress. You know the one. Whether you saw black and blue or white and gold (wrong), it’s hard to remember anything that’s gone quite as viral as The Dress. Well, in these dark times, we thankfully have a new dumb color controversy to fixate on: Billie Eilish’s shoes.

Over the weekend, Billie Eilish took to her Instagram stories to share why she was exasperated with her father. She held up a pair of Nike Air More Uptempo sneakers, and explained that despite the shoes being mint and white, her dad always says the shoes are white and pink. Clearly, a lot of people agreed with her dad, and as the stories went on, she became increasingly frustrated with the responses. Here’s the full video; highly recommend watching until the end.

Okay, so as a person with eyes, I can definitively say that these shoes *look* pink and white. I know the dress controversy led to some revelations about how our eyes process color differently or whatever, but you are not going to tell me you looked at this video and saw a mint shoe. If that’s you in the comments, stop lying!! The shoes look pink, and I won’t be convinced otherwise.

That being said, I try t0 admit when I’m wrong, and it appears that the shoe really is mint and white. Determined to prove her point, Billie posted another story with an official Nike photo of the show, and it is indeed mint green and white. According to Sneaker News, the mint/white colorway was released in 2017, which lines up with Billie’s comment about having the shoes for years. On the flip side, there’s no evidence that the shoes have ever been available in a pink and white version.

So like, what the f*ck is wrong with Billie Eilish’s camera? Sorry, but I will not take the heat for this—the shoes look pink!!! My soul might be broken, but my eyes work just fine! The shoes are a few years old and definitely look a little worn, so it’s possible that the mint has faded, and the white isn’t as white as it use to be. But still, the shoes in these videos absolutely look pink. I’m sure this is another weird phenomenon about how our eyes work, but I’m also going to suggest that Billie check out her camera settings.

Honestly, this shoe conundrum was just what I needed today to stop focusing on everything else that’s going on in the world right now. Thank you, Billie Eilish, for giving us something to argue about that’s not politics. Drop your opinion on the shoes in the comments, but just know that if you say you see mint, I think you’re a liar.

Billie Eilish Slammed ‘Nylon’ For Their F*cked Up Cover

It’s obviously a well-established tradition for magazines to have celebrities on the cover. The thing is, when magazine chooses someone famous as their cover star, there’s typically a photoshoot, or at least an actual photo of the person to put on said cover. There’s also typically an interview that serves as the feature for the issue. You’ve all read magazines; you understand how it works. If there’s not a feature or interview for the issue, at the very least, the celeb probably knows that they’re going to be on the cover. But apparently sometimes none of those things are true, hence why Billie Eilish is now beefing with NYLON Germany.

Just in case you’re not aware, a quick explainer of Billie Eilish. She’s only 17 years old, but has quickly become one of the top stars in music, and she got her first number-one song last week with “Bad Guy.” She’s known for her creepy, outside-the-box music and visuals, and she defies traditional beauty standards. Most notably, she usually wears oversized, baggy clothing so people don’t comment on her body. Considering that she’s literally still a child, this seems more than fair. Basically, she’s the current Gen-Z queen.

Billie Eilish’s dedication to taking focus away from her body is part of what makes this story so crazy. A couple days ago, the German edition of NYLON magazine posted their new dual covers on Instagram. The issue is titled “DIGITAL PRODIGIES,” so naturally it features some of the top Gen-Z stars, like Willow Smith, Madelaine Petsch, and Billie Eilish. The first cover features Lisa and Lena, German sisters who had the most-followed account on TikTok until earlier this year. And the second cover, as you’ve probably guessed by now, features Billie Eilish.

But it’s not the Billie Eilish you’re used to seeing. Gone is the silvery hair, the oversized hoodie, and any shred of personality. Instead, the image makes her look like some kind of cyborg, with a bald head and skin that’s a metallic gold. Oh, and she’s not wearing any clothes. It barely even looks like Billie Eilish, which kind of seems like the point.

But it turns out that it doesn’t look like her, because it’s not even a photo of her.

After NYLON Germany posted the cover, Billie Eilish had some things to say in the comments:

Wow wow wow, this is a lot to take in. So first of all, Billie and her team were never asked permission, or even told that this cover was happening. I don’t know what all the rules are for something like this, but this is different than TIME using a photo of Donald Trump without asking permission first. At the very least, it seems like you would notify Billie’s team out of courtesy if an image of her was going to be featured on the COVER.

In her second point, Billie Eilish clarifies that this isn’t even a real picture of her. I don’t know whether they did a full CGI job, or just heavily edited a real photo of her, but this is some weird sh*t. From looking at the photo with no other information, you would definitely think Billie sat down for a whole photoshoot with the magazine, because this doesn’t look like it’s supposed to be a drawing or something.

But Billie’s third point is really the main root of the issue here. The magazine took (or created) an image of someone who’s still a minor, and made it so she’s not wearing clothes, or at least a shirt?? Billie Eilish is incredibly conscious of NOT sexualizing her persona, so for a magazine to do it without asking her permission or even telling her feels like a huge violation.

And lastly, they removed all her f*ckin’ hair. Not cool, guys.

For what it’s worth, Lisa and Lena clarified that they were asked about their cover:

While I’m glad that they consented to their appearance, that makes it all the more sh*tty that NYLON never reached out to Billie Eilish or her team. This kind of reminds me of when Kanye West included a sculpture of Taylor Swift’s naked body in his music video for “Famous” without asking her first. It’s not quite as bad as revenge porn or leaking someone’s actual nudes without their permission, but it’s still an uncool thing to do.

This whole story feels extremely wild considering that Billie Eilish is one of the world’s biggest stars right now, and this magazine only has 15,000 followers on Instagram. I’m truly shocked there was not an immediate take-down and subsequent Notes app apology, but the magazine did (sort of) respond to Billie’s criticism. They updated the caption on the original post with the following statement:

“For this cover, it was never our intention to create a look that is confusing or insulting to Billie Eilish. It was only ever our intention to honor Billies (sp.) impact and her work by creating this avatar which is part of a cover series highlighting the power of digital prodigy artists. This avatar is a piece of 3D artwork created in dedication to her achievements and the positive effect she has had on millions around the globe – including us.”

Yeah, okay, I really didn’t think they put her on the cover because they hated her and her achievements. Essentially, NYLON is doubling down on the cover, and not even addressing Billie’s complaint about the lack of clothes her robot clone is wearing. I get that it’s someone’s artistic vision, but it still clearly feels like they were in the wrong here.

8 Celebrities Who Are Way Younger Than You Think

This week, everyone is busy making their favorite celebrities look older with the FaceApp old filter, and it’s really gotten me thinking about celebrities’ ages. We’ve talked before about some celebs who basically don’t age, but not everyone is older than they look. There are certain stars who are surprisingly young, whether they just look mature for their age, or it feels like they’ve been around forever.

While everyone knows you can stay young-looking by drinking lots of water, sticking to your skin care regimen, and getting lots of sleep (and minding your own business), looking older is a little more tricky. As someone who constantly gets told I have a baby face, I’d love to know how all these famous teenagers look so sophisticated. Here are some celebrities who are definitely younger than you think.

1. Shawn Mendes

Look at that fine-ass man and tell me you would have guessed that he is only TWENTY YEARS OLD. I am fully uncomfortable knowing how young Shawn Mendes is, because I am actively turned on by everything he does. He got famous on Vine, which should have been my first clue about his age, but it feels like his songs have already been on the radio for such a long time. Whatever, I’m still into it.

2. Zoë Kravitz

Despite the fact that she’s super gorgeous, I was surprised to find out recently that Zoë Kravitz is only 30 years old. I think because her parents are so famous, it just feels like she’s been around forever. She’s also much younger than most of her Big Little Lies costars, so it’s easy to forget that she was born in the late 80s.

3. Cardi B

Cardi B is one of those people who just kind of feels ageless. Like, I don’t actually think that she’s old, but she’s been through a lot in her life, and the fact that she and I were in high school at the same time just feels wrong. Okay, I can’t really picture her in high school at all, but you get what I mean. She’s only 26, and it will never not be strange that she and Ariana Grande are the exact same age. I’ve known this for months, but it still gets me every time.

4. Millie Bobby Brown

When Stranger Things first premiered, it made sense that all the kids on the show were actual kids. But now, Millie Bobby Brown has fully broken out as a major star, and she’s already turning into a mini fashion icon. She looks so sophisticated that I’m struggling to wrap my mind around the fact that she just turned 15 a few months ago. Did your skin look like that when you were 15? Because mine most certainly did not.

5. Sophie Turner

My cover (and one of my favorite shoot days ever) for The Edit is out and I want to live in these clothes forever

A post shared by Sophie Turner (@sophiet) on

Sophie Turner was an actual kid when she was first cast on Game of Thrones, so it makes sense that she’s only 23. Still, she’s grown up fast, and she doesn’t really seem young at all. Her whole thing now is chugging wine on Instagram, which she couldn’t even legally do in the United States until a couple years ago! She’s cool af, so I’m not even mad that she’s younger than me.

6. Billie Eilish

A post shared by BILLIE EILISH (@billieeilish) on

Billie Eilish has quickly become one of the biggest stars in music, but I still get a lot of questions about who she is. That probably has something to do with the fact that she’s only 17, so a lot of adults are just now hearing about her. Billie is very talented, and her attitude is definitely something different, so I would expect she’ll be a major star for years to come. If you haven’t listened yet, catch tf up.

7. Noah Cyrus

Noah Cyrus actually looks a little like Billie Eilish, but like, with lip fillers and lash extensions. She’s slightly older than Billie, at 19, but she’s been on our radar for years thanks to her famous older siblings. Her music is cool, but her relationship drama (remember Lil Xan?) definitely feels like high school bullsh*t. She’ll grow out of it…maybe.

8. Bella Hadid

It’s truly insane that Bella Hadid is only 22. Depending on the photo, she can either look like she’s in her 20s or her 50s, and it really messes with my mind. She never looks old in a bad way, she just has such a mature looking face, mostly thanks to her cosmetic procedures, lol. 22-year-olds just aren’t supposed to look like this!

And before you come for me in the comments for saying people look old, everyone on this list looks great! When you’re 17, looking old isn’t really a bad thing. There are definitely other celebrities who are deceivingly young, but these are the ones who really made me do a double take. I mean…Shawn Mendes. That’s all.
