There was once a time when reality stars like Kim Kardashian getting invited to Anna Wintour’s exclusive Metropolitan affair was a sensitive subject, but those days are long over. Despite rumors of a possible across-the-board Kardashian-Jenner family snub last year for the 2023 “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” affair, Kim has attended the Met Gala a whopping 10 times over the past 10 years whether the fashion elite (and overly invested spectators at home) liked it or not. The first year Kim attended in 2013 as Kanye West’s guest while pregnant was the gloved floral Ricardo Tisci for Givenchy moment that changed the Gala’s history forever and she has been making sure to turn heads on the Met steps ever since. Some of her looks were more incendiary than inspiring, like during the 2022 carpet where Kim’s “In America: Anthology Fashion” choice to wear an original Marilyn Monroe dress borrowed from the Ripley archives sent costume preservationists and women tired of the Kardashian’s constant pushing of unattainable female body image (she had proudly lost 16 pounds to fit into the dress) into a full-blown online rage.
Ironically enough, this year’s exhibit theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” celebrates the preservation of costume pieces that are so delicate that they need to be kept in special “coffins” to stay intact. Knowing Kim, it was fair to guess she could have either shown up in another timeless pop culture piece just to make the internet mad again or a literal coffin covering her entire body because minimalism has been her thing for a while now. TBH, I don’t know what I was expecting but I can tell you what happened: Kim got up and worked. Let’s get a better look at Kim Kardashian’s 2024 Met Gala moment in all its glory.
