I can confidently admit the Wicked movie taught me a lot of things. Ariana Grande is basically a comedian, I would trust Jon Chu with my life, and Jonathan Bailey is everybody’s type. In a recent interview with Teen Vogue, Mr. Thicc Thighs from the West End (his formal title in my household) shared a spot of tea on his Wicked audition process. Apparently, after sending in his audition tape, Jonathan had another obligation come through that meant his schedule wouldn’t align. Alas, the Ozian powers that be came through and the Wicked shoot dates changed, which led to a meeting between the future Fiyero and John Chu that got “weirdly very emotional” (sounds like the Wicked cast we know and love) and ended in a thumbs up. Shortly thereafter JB was thrown on a Zoom with Ari and Cynthia and the rest was history. Even though it pretty much sounds like Jonathan Bailey had the role in the bag from day one, what celebs auditioned for Fiyero in the Wicked movie?
Celebrities who audition to play Fiyero in Wicked
Nick Jonas
Honestly, this doesn’t surprise me. Nick Jonas is no stranger to Broadway. His performance as Marius in the Les Mis 25th Anniversary Concert was not too shabby, he took over for Daniel Radcliffe in the very silly How To Succeed, and he’s recently nabbed the major gig of leading the upcoming Last Five Years revival in 2025. Does that mean he has the pipes and sexual prowess to growl out “As Long As You’re Mine” in Wicked Part Two? I guess we’ll never know.
Joe Jonas
Now this, this surprises me a bit. Not because Joe auditioned against his own brother considering the Jo Bros have been in a cold war for #1 teeny bopper since puberty, but because Joe’s second solo album ever is coming out nearly 15 years after his first one in 2025. The vocal trajectory from “Cake by the Ocean” to the male lead in the biggest movie musical since Grease would’ve been pretty surprising. As for the awkies scenario in which one of the brothers had gotten the job over the other, Nick said on their podcast it wouldn’t have mattered because they “want someone with the last name Jonas to win.” Okay, now let’s ask Kevin!
Spencer Sutherland
Spencer from I Know What You Did Last Summer not only auditioned but got a second call back for Wicked. He revealed in March of 2023 on The Zach Sang Show when he realized there were “Probably 20” people left in the mix it made him think “Oh shit, this is real!”
Ryan McCartan
The star from the original cast of Heathers: The Musical played Fiyero on Broadway in 2018. Ryan lamented in an interview the movie spot was “one of the many, many things [he] hasn’t booked” but he has “no hard feelings” against Jon Chu despite “work[ing] so hard.”
Charlie Puth
Okay, this one is just an internet rumor from the early days of the movie’s announcement but TBH…I can picture it (and not just because he’s low-key a bite-sized Jonathan Bailey). Don’t sleep on producer/singer/musician Charlie Puth or his cute little eyebrow cut, y’all, he’s kinda sorta the prince of pop.
Did Aaron Tveit audition for Wicked?
@tveit_for_me Aaron talks about @Wicked Movie in an interview with popcultplanet during Earth Abides press! #aarontveit #fiyero #wicked #wickedmovie #wickedmusical #earthabides #mgmplus #tonyawardwinner #fyp ♬ original sound – All things Aaron Tveit
Broadway Baddie Aaron Tveit played Fiyero on Broadway back in 2008. The triple threat had only positive things to say about the Wicked movie casting all new faces to continue the magical show’s history on screen. It doesn’t sound like he was a part of the creative process, perhaps because he’s a few years older than the current cast.
