It’s a beautiful day for all the Desperate Housewives stans out there: Disney’s Onyx Collective is developing a spinoff of the early 2000s series! The beloved ABC show ran for eight seasons from 2004 to 2012, and if we’re being honest, life just hasn’t been the same since it ended. Apparently, 180 episodes just weren’t enough — 13 years later, fans are still craving more scandal, secrets, and suburban drama.
The new take on Desperate Housewives, fittingly titled Wisteria Lane, is being developed by writer and executive producer Natalie Chaidez (The Flight Attendant), with Kerry Washington (my Scandal queen) also on board as an executive producer. I mean, if this isn’t a recipe for success, IDK what is.
Just a few days prior to this announcement, Eva Longoria, who starred as Gabrielle Solis, commented on a possible reboot during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live!. When Andy Cohen asked her who would take “the most convincing” to make that happen, she replied, “Marc Cherry, our creator. He feels like we’ve exhausted the characters.” She pointed out that they made 24 episodes a year for a decade.
So, are Marc and the original cast members involved at all? And when is the spinoff coming out? Here’s everything to know about Wisteria Lane, the Desperate Housewives spinoff in development.
Desperate Housewives Spinoff Wisteria Lane: Release Date, Plot
When Is The Desperate Housewives Spinoff Series Coming Out?
Well, the series is still in development, which means it hasn’t entered production just yet. The team is likely still working on the script, securing funding, casting, and all the behind-the-scenes preparation. Sadly, it could be years before Wisteria Lane hits our screens, and there’s always a chance it might not move forward. But if all goes well, we can expect the remake series to stream on Hulu, where Onyx Collective’s other shows live.
Desperate Housewives Spinoff Series Plot
It sounds like they’re not straying far from the original concept, thank goodness. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wisteria Lane “will focus on a group of friends living on a seemingly picture-perfect cul de sac whose facade hides a boatload of secrets.” Since the original centered around the mystery of Mary Alice Young’s suicide, I imagine there will be a similar storyline this time around, but TBD.
How does one help speed up the development process? I need this show immediately. Interestingly, creator Marc Cherry of Desperate Housewives is not involved at the moment, but sources say he may join the project in the future.
Desperate Housewives Spinoff Series Cast
There’s no news about Wisteria Lane casting yet, but the original Desperate Housewives cast featured icons Eva Longoria, Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman, Nicollette Sheridan, and Brenda Strong. Might they make an appearance in the new version? When Eva was a guest on WWHL in 2023, she didn’t seem too confident that her former costars would want to revisit the show. “I think I’d be the only one to sign up,” she said, adding, “I miss Gabby.”
Stay tuned for Wisteria Lane updates!
